When designing a website for a religious cult...

If they want the site to have a doomsday counter that tells people how many days are left until the world ends in fiery death and destruction, do them a favor (it's the little things that make you stand out as a programmer) and use some kind of conditional that turns the whole site off on the day that the world ends.  Because you know, just in case the world DOESNT end, you don't want the site to say, "negative one days until we all die"  because that would just be silly.

  • *lol*

Why does this website talk about the "first nuclear war" anyway? The first nuclear war took place in 1945.

  • This is clearly a WTF on the developer's part. However, to be fair to the cult, most of the world has not made it through Sept. 13 as of this writing, so we still have some time. Maybe Australia. You Aussies got any nuclear hell going on down under?

  • IMO every part of this world is already through Sept. 12th, so it's already to late for Armaggedon.

In all fairness, he predicted a nuclear war, not Armageddon.

What he should do is say he forgot to carry the 1 when making his calculations, and nuclear war will start Sept. 12, 2016.  He'll probably die by then, and won't have to worry about being embarrassed again.

  •
most of the world has not made it through Sept. 13 as of this writing, so we still have some time. Maybe Australia. You Aussies got any nuclear hell going on down under?
Australia's east coast is GMT+10:00 = 15 hours ahead of US eastern time (GMT-5:00).  There are only 2 countries that see a new day before Australia and I doubt you're in either of them for they are small and insignificant (lets see if there are any Kiwis here).

To answer your question; it is possible that a nuclear detonation has occurred here and we simply haven't noticed yet - the only nuclear weapons that exist in Australia are at a place called Pine Gap - a US facility.  I don't think many Australians would notice if it blew up.

Now that you've pointed that out, you're right. I was looking at it this way:

    • On Sept. 11, the counter read 1 days remaining before the start of nuclear war
    • On Sept. 12, the counter read 0 days remaining before the start of nuclear war

Which could be interpreted as: "Oh no - no more days before Sept. 13th, on which day nuclear war will begin!"

Looking back now, though, I don't want to defend that interpretation!

But the 11th is 1 day before the 12th, right?  And Septembet 12th was 0 days before the 12th.

Perhaps you were interpteting it as 1 day remaining until the day before the start of nuclear war?

Yes, it was a misinterpretation. But consider this:

Let's have the meeting next Friday.

Now if this is Wednesday, will the meeting be in 2 days, or 9 days?

At my last job, the staff met bi-monthly. At my new job, we meet bi-weekly.

At face value, I take bi-weekly and bi-monthly to mean every two weeks (or so). However, by that logic, some of the meetings could take place twice a week, every two weeks, or every two months.

I'm not sure if such idioms are in use outside the US, but they have always caused me (mild) confusion. I'm just saying, when it comes to dates, math, and the English language, I don't feel so bad for misinterpreting something.

No stupid, Australia is GMT+01:00. Everyone know Australia is that little country in the mountains next to Germany, on the other side from Switzerland. It's that place where Arnie comes from.

(...and by the way, for those that don't already know, a kiwi is flightless bird native to New Zealand, or a person who has sexual intercourse with sheep.)

I have figured out what went wrong with his predictions. We had some vision where he saw a date and wrote it down as he saw it - 9/12/2006, but of course god uses a sensible time format, so it should really be interpreted as the 12th of December, 2006. At least we don't have to buy bloody Christmas presents this year.

Of course I jest, but I'll owe you a beer.

  • It's at -5 days now. Then again...so THAT'S what that funny boom noise I heard the other day was.

There's a partial eclipse on 11th Sept 2007, so there's the end of his war, a little ahead of time, and the darknening of the sun, and on a significant date too! As for why no nukes were reported, he'll just claim that the only nukes used were bunker-busters that didnt create a surface explosion, or low-yield devices that went unnoticed.

"Next Friday" is the one that happens next week.
"Last Friday" is the one that happened last week.

No, "Last Friday" should be used to refer to the Friday immediately before the world's end on September 12, 2006.
Actually bi-monthly means every two months.  Semi-monthly means twice a month.  You have to figure out whether bi-monthly means every two months or twice a month in your case because the people who told it to you want you to figure out what they meant, not what they said.  Correct them someday and marvel at the response.....

You:  Ummm.... why do you want to see us at another bi-monthly meeting in two weeks?  Bi-monthly means every other month, here's the dictionary reference.

Boss:  Bi-monthly can mean twice a month under certain circumstances, it has become common usage.  Are you one of those people who refuses to think outside the box?  You are now demoted to the mail room.

Many people like to flap thier lips and then want you to ignore everything they've said and do exactly what they want you to do.  It has become so prevalent that most of us don't even bat an eye when something truely rediculous is said.  The best example is "I could care less.".  Most people say it improperly, but they assume that you will know what they mean because you recognize the phrase as a magic phrase that means that the utterer doesn't care rather than actually listening to the words and figuring out the meaning.  If you try to correct them, they say "but you know what I meant!!!".
