Sony at the bleeding edge as always

  • For the benefit of anyone using IE (boo! boo!), here's what you get if you open the above in e.g. Firefox:

    http://www.sonystyle.com.hk/ss/vaio/upgrade.html

    <font color="#ff0000">Sorry!</font>
    <font size="2"> To best view this site, we recommend using Internet Explorer 4.0+ or Netscape Communicator 4.7.

    </font>

                      </p><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td nowrap="nowrap" valign="top"><font size="2"><span class="css2">To download recent versions:</span></font></td>
                      <td width="20"><img height="1" src="http://www.sonystyle.com.hk/ss/vaio/Image/clear.gif" width="20" /><br />
                      </td>
                      <td nowrap="nowrap" valign="top"><font size="2"><span class="css2"><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/" target="_blank">Internet Explorer</a><br />
                              <a href="http://home.netscape.com/" target="_blank">Netscape Communicator</a></span></font></td></tr></tbody></table><p>&nbsp;</p>

  • This function explains it:
    if( navigator.appName.charAt(0)=="N" && navigator.appVersion.charAt(0)==5){ location.href="../../upgrade.html" }

    (This also explains why the site works in Opera).

    God, please forgive Sony's web designers, for they know not what they do.

  • I'm in firefox, and I see it fine. Huzzah for NoScript!

  • I use User-Agent-Switcher for these tasks since it doesn't actually prevent the normal sending of user-agent data - but allows you to change it on those (thankfully rare) occasions where you stumble on a braindead website.

    Meanwhile, be sure not to leave it set to "Internet Explorer 6" when replying on this forum - several pieces of functionality disappear.

  • It looks ugly in every browser, so the real wtf. here is that "best viewed with". Its just best viewed when looking not at it.

  • Actually, that's kinda got me wondering. This page is so ugly and so out of step with the rest of the site that I reckon it's an orphaned page that someone's forgotten to delete, and that search engines still have a reference to.

    How was it found in the first place?
