Introducing a WTF thread at a forum I frequent. Basically this guy got ripped off by a web design company, he now says all web developers will go out of business due to a program called Antenna. Apparently it will also replace ASP, PHP and whatever you name. Just be careful it doesn't replace you!

I'll leave you to read the thread and look at the "html" that antenna produces.

Well, without commenting on the quality of the sites generated with such a tool, I would think that many small businesses could successfully make promotional/informational websites using one, and even save a buck or two. For example, why should a small local bar & grill that wants to post a menu, hours, pictures, and specials for its small customer base really need an enterprise grade website. That being said, such tools don't guarantee that the site will be attractive (or even not sickening) when put together by someone without graphical talent. The few bucks they might save just might not be worth it if their site looks ugly and unprofessional.

But the real WTF is the guys attitude on that forum thread. Obviously he has no clue about serious websites, serious web development, interactive web applications, etc. Reading his posts truly made me say WTF.

Seriously though, this looks like the VB of web design. From their site

Antenna has its own publisher built in, and it can be set to publish changes only, so you can update your site very quickly.

I think it publishes only the changes because the crap it generates is an order of magnitude larger than it needs to be. I'm not a big fan of the 'fixed column width' style of CSS layout, but this thing does absolute positioning for every element.

I think this calls for a reference to unskilled and unaware

You are not being the smart web developmental guy, no sir you are not! We are having at my company the greatest of web design tools it is being called GnomePage! It is with the most excellently of capabilities, I will say how it is works, GnomePage is a little box and you are plugs it into your computer. Inside the box is a little web gnome! He is crawls through the cable into your USB serial port and there he is using the Google to make search for things that looking good on your web page, and then he making the exact copies using your computer so you are having the web page that is of all coolness! He is doing all of the works and you only has to sit and reload your page in the web browser so you see how is the gnome makes your web page so pretty and awesome!

We are will selling this over the interweb when it is finished but right now we only are looking for investors who can making twenty times the investment when GnomePage is hitting the market with all speed.

Yeah - it's kind of the same feeling that you get in a public restroom, where you put some toilet paper on the seat.

As for small businesses and organizations that can't afford any professional web design, there are better alternatives. Google pages for one.

Once this guy gets this tool together in the next few years, your 89 year old gran will make fans, fan design is now old hat, Blandtenna will make fan design so easy to use your all going out of business in 5 years time!! Dont try and be complicated, fan design is an easy option these days. That guy from Web Wiz who is in fan design upset me so much i came on this forum to learn about it, i can now build a fan in minutes, thanks to a guy in fan design that made my life hell, i feel that confident that i could leave my job and start building industrial fans for the next 3 years, but i wont because there aint no future in fan design, because people like myself that are getting ripped off by people that are in fan design are learning fast, aluminium, steel, plastic, dont make me laugh in can be all made simple in cardboard and paste!

This Antenna sounds fantastic. Let's have a look at some of the generated code!

They have the meta tag right there, though I thought short tags were supposed to self-close:

Woa, that site is awful! Serious overuse of flash (it eats 100% CPU on my 1-year old computer) and it somehow stops me from switching tabs in Firefox...
Then the guy goes and complains that it is slower in FF than IE, which is true, but thats kinda like saying complaining that your Farrari is slower than your Honda when you push it uphil with the handbrake on...

I recall reading some article about about how to make the menu come before the content in the html code, but still show up on the right. Well, this solves that problem, on the example site, half the links are before the text, and the other half are after the text in the source code. Because you position everything absolutely, it doesn't matter where you put the stuff in the source code. It turns HTML into a bulky image format, really. This antannae tool could just as well churn out a .png and then stick that on the web (if it was possible to stick JS code into them).

I think the CSS thing is quite funny, mainly because it doesn't seem to use any proper stylesheets, so this CSS feature must be some way to atomatically change all the inline styles on all the pages.

The only thing it's missing is a HTML -> PHP converter, then you could get rid of those pesky server side programers that never get anything done.

I've looked at some of them and surprisingly some are not bad. They are not candidates for the "best web site in the world" award, but for small or medium companies not focused on the web, they probably do the job. (I didn't look at the HTML code though, but so do normal people)

Any way with regards W3c validation, its hard to pass imo, i made finna-fans in dreamweaver8 and dreamweaver still didn't get through validation, if a £400 software cant get through it what can? i think w3c is too strict and to be honest most web sites dont pass it if truth known, but nothing happens to the site it still works fine in any browser.

Maybe Antenna is the future, but looking at cmcmarktscfd.com, at least we can say it's not the present. This web page is so bad and ugly that it is not a good reference for Antenna. Some other sides made with Antenna (look above) are better and even reach an "average" level.

I've always wondered why so many people use charAt for version detection. Did none of them consider what will happen when the software they're trying to detect reaches version 10?

I built [url]http://www.finna-fans.co.uk[/url] this was my first site using dreamweaver8, this took me 208 hours to build but i did have a power cut at my house, so taking the power cut into account i think it took less than 200 hours. I charged my client £8000 for that site, but it was in winter and oil was $78 a barrel, my fingers are slow in winter time, but my client understood.

Heck, anyone can build that in 5 hours. I believe you spend the remaining 195 hours manufacturing welding goggles for the site visitors.

Well i did have a power cut, but hey i earned £8000 for that, not bad for 200 hours work, i would of built it in Antenna, but i didnt know how i could justify the price. I told my client i paid £400 for dreamweaver8 and i needed to recoupe some money, he understood!
