*cringe* oracle on rhel4

  • Ah, I've just spent the last week installing 10g R2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4, what could you possibly like about that system?!

Its even worse than installing on Windows, the endless kernel tweaks, swap size modifications, argh... makes me want to break down and cry just thinking about it...

and then of course there is Oracle's multi-purpose "error message for every possible problem" - ORA-12154.

    please. make. it. stop.

  • You could have hired someone familiar with this combination? You could have read setup guides, such as on oracle-base.com or puschitz.com? I suppose it's more comfortable for you to keep posting rants instead.

  • lofwyr You ever installed oracle on redhat ?

    jimmah I feel your pain

  • yeah, just to clear up any confusion, I have used the guides you mentioned, plus the official documentation from both Red Hat and Oracle, every time I've tried it takes hours and hours of tweaking. I'm not an idiot, I wouldn't complain about something if it was simply my fault it didn't work!

    :)

Does installing Oracle Ebusiness Suite 11 on RHEL/CentOS count? ;-) Or 10g SE on gentoo? Or 8i/9i EE on SuSE Prof.? I'll repeat it: why not hire someone, who's familiar with this?

And what exactly were you tweaking, out of curiosity?

Don't mean to disappoint you, but ORA-12154 probably just means you are having trouble talking to Oracle. But cheer up, there are thousands of other error messages you could see once you get inside Oracle. And if Oracle thinks you're really cool, it will give you an ORA-600, which covers a variety of undocumented problems.

The Oracle DBMS is not for the uninitiated, and somebody is offering you an initiation. Good career move!

Just b/c you can't point an click it, doesn't mean its a hard install. And as for the kernel tweaks and swap size, you can leave those as is and ignore the warning if you want ( the install should let you ignore things like that if I remember correctly ) but it will just run better with.

Just like telling you that if it is on Windows, and you have more than 4GB of ram, you need to add the kernel switch /PAE; if you want more than 2GB of app memory available to a single app, then /3GB too; put it in Background services mode (instead of foreground apps mode); decrease the screen resolution and number of colors displayed to lowest acceptible values; make the paging file a static size to prevent dynamic resizing; if you want to open more than 50~ Oracle Forms sessions through the same Windows AS install, you need to either run the application from the command line, not the service using the desktop head space or manually increase the available background service program heap size (try finding that one somewhere); etc.

But as for those suggestions, they probably figure that monkeys using windows ought to know that stuff (maybe not the last one, that is hateful).

And remember, Oracle isn't for everyone...if you are performing the production install for a company, then you pretty much want to CYA, and Oracle is just trying to help you out (prememptive support is support).

  • Oh, yeah.

Even more fun - try making the RedHat installers work under Debian... BTDT. I had to make it pretend it was a RedHat server to make things start in the first place. At least it's running now, but I sincerely hope I never have to do it again.

Why people don't use supported distributions (RHAT, SLES) or rebuilds (such as CentOS) which come with a detailed installation guide, is beyond me.  If it was an experienced Oracle guy, I'd say it's because of the thrill, but we're talking entry level here. sigh
