Heads up for the admins
-
Specifically, @PJH, @dhromed, @apapadimoulis, @PaulaBean. (None of the other admins visit, it seems.)
As of the next update, deleted posts will be collapsed by default. There will be a button at the top of the topic to turn it off, and you can click on the collapsed pieces to view the posts.
Here's a screenshot of the feature from my local machine:
If you clicked on "1 post omitted" above on the left, you would see a comment that someone posted on the article after I performed the FizzBuzz Cleanup. This is what the deleted posts look like.
The functionality will be disabled when:
- You click the "Unhide Deleted Posts" button
- You filter the topic to a person's posts by clicking "Filter to <n> posts in topic" on the usercard or clicking their avatar in the topic map (You can re-enable it by clicking the button)
?show_deleted=true
or?show_deleted=ACTUALLY_YOU_CAN_PUT_ANYTHING_HERE
is present in the URL
Personally, I can say that this change has improved my reading experience in even the limited time I had to try it out (I wrote it on the 15th).
Since this is a significant change to the UI, I figured you would want to know in advance. I'll also be making a similar post on Meta for the admins of other sites, but with a slightly different tone ;)
-
for me at least, this will be easier to read; it somewhat distracting to not only see "this post withdrawn by author" -- but then wonder, why was it withdrawn? was it too vile? was it typos? was it...

Here's the meta post, with another screenshot for your viewing pleasure:

I'm pretty sure that was the case for everyone (who could see deleted posts).

That's still going to be a problem for 24 hours after the post gets withdrawn, even though nobody except the admins can see anything about the post other than its author.

`?show_deleted=<script>alert("This is not XSS unless Discourse managed to make booleans into an XSS vulnerability.");</script>`
Weird...
`` `no space```
`space`

That's one of the more fun things that I like about SMF, actually. It rewrites the parser in PHP to handle getting things from GET specifically for situations like this.
Aside from replacing the default separator from
&
to;
because it avoids the whole having to write shit as&
everywhere for validation, it actually looks easier to read, it actually accepts empty parameters. There are plenty of cases where you get URLs with
;save
or;xml
in the URL which are internally parsed to$_GET['save']
and$_GET['xml']
which wouldn't otherwise be defined.Seems like the same solution should be applied here, meaning you just need to declare
?show_deleted

I'm wondering why information intended for the admins was posted in a public topic, instead of, say, a PM? I would have suggested the Staff area, except @riking can't access that, so...
-
Because surely it applies to all the moderators of which the group of people in 'staff' is quite big.

Flag a random post for moderators ;)
