Apparently Community Server 2.0 cannot make my avatar look right

  • I have uploaded a new one, about 100-150 pixels wide. I knew it would be reduced, but it looked like crud.

So I reduced the size to 52 pixels wide in Photoshop, my estimate of about how big they are. Looks like crud covered in crap.

Is there anything I can do to make a 'nice' one?

  • You could try one at exactly 50x50 px.

Certain avatars survive the hellish jpeg compression better than others. Mine, for instance, looks tops -- but I don't know why. Another guy had a South Park avatar that looked chewed up by an animal.

  • Mine seems to have survived pretty well, but I couldn't tell you why, either.

  • Mine wasn't that good to start with :)

  • <FONT face=Tahoma>I'm pretty sure the picture I uploaded is not 50x50... Not sure how mine remains intact though...

EDIT: Hey, in my profiles it looked good!

Uhh, yeah ... That'd be me.

Somewhere there is the thread of me bitching about this, and the 42 different ways I attempted to upload the image to get it to look halfway decent.  I eventually gave up and accepted that it's going to look like crap here, no matter what I do.

There are a lot of double pixel rows/columns.

I photoshopped 'em a bit, and it is definitely crudely scaled up from 40x40.

    Same for Sgt. Zim.

So CS scales it down to 40x40 then back up to 50x50?  WTF?

Danger ... Quote Pyramid of Doom approaching!

    Uhh.  Yeah.  Anyway.

Yes, among others, I did upload it as a 50x50.  Never tried 40x40 though.

  • I've been inspired by all this avatar talk to make an abstract 80's style textbook cover avatar.  Apparently random messes of color don't seem to be affected by the uploader.

    Well that's just totally odd.

Apparently it DOES scale it down to 40x40 when you upload, compress it, and then the display size in the HTML/CSS is 50x50. I tested that by right-clicking the image in FFX and choosing View Image, so no HTML can influence.

It looked rather nice, save for the compression.

Mine was ported from the previous version, not uploaded anew. Maybe that was the reason for its quality.

  • ♿ (Parody)

Whoops. That would be my fault. I customized the thread layout and increased avatars to 50x50 ... but I didn't notice a problem for the few avatars I looked at.

Because those were copied directly from the old version and didn't go through CS2's upload mill, I assume. :)

  • So, here's the original.  (Actually, the original is much larger, but this is the biggest version of it that I currently have access to, since I'm at work right now...)

    Zim's Avatar
That's at 150x100; every smaller version I've ever made came from this one, or the larger original that this came from.

So, is the problem fixed, Alex?  Can we try re-uploading, or ...

  • BINNED

Don't worry! Discourse default will round all the things!
