Why floor when you can round?
-
I've noticed something on thew views, when it's over 1K. The number of views is rounded up for the abbreviation. This is a mispreresentation of how many views that the topic has had. As you can see below, the "Let Me Write That For You" topic has only had 1073 views, but the abbreviation shows 1.1K, a milestone that it has not yet reached.
-
I'm sure this was discussed somewhere, but the search being what it is, here's another example:
-
I demand this to be changed to banker's rounding this instant!
Onebox ignores anchors so here, have a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banker's_rounding#Round_half_to_even

Onebox'd that for you.

And no, I made no changes. I quoted you and copy/pasted the link. Yes, I realize you didn't want to quote the above.
-
Oh. It did keep the link. Never tried hovering over the title. And yet it shows the beginning of the article in onebox.
That's not confusing at all!
-
It's just encouraging discourse about the meta of the topic.

I don't see the problem. An "abbreviation" like 1.1k is an estimate. Rounding is a better estimate than flooring. So what's the problem?
TL;DR: You're doing it wrong.
-
I think we should math.round a random direction so every time you go back not only do you get the topic shuffle, you get the view & like shuffle as well.
Consistency is important.
-
Hmmm, maybe they should use the format of post times:
<1m
So then 1073 would be
<1.1K
-
If they're really rounding, your suggestion would be TRWTF. What happens when there are 1023 posts?

>1.0K

How about simply 1k? Why bother with 1.0 if that's what the rounding would generate?
I think the whole k syntax is inappropriate here in any case.
-
Fair enough. I can get behind that. But I still don't see a bug.

Then maybe
>1K
. A bit more info with just one character.Fair enough. I can get behind that. But I still don't see a bug.
Yeah, I like the addition of
<
and>
instead of changing it to floor.

Thanks for that, I was losing focus around the "Rounding is" mark.

Rounding is a better estimate than flooring. So what's the problem?
The problem is, in certain places on here it doesn't 'round' - it 'rounds up'. Always. e.g. 2h59 rounds to 3h. 2h01 rounds to... 3h. (e.g. the countdown on automatically closing posts.)

This makes it so the INB4 badge means something - CLOSED - WONTFIX - Best game.

Why floor or round when you can ceiling?
