Why unicode includes emoji

An interesting new video from Computerphile that explains why emoji are included in unicode. I've seen the question raised in topics here, but I wasn't going to attempt to find them using the site search...

I'll summarise:

Japanese mobile company was already having to use two bytes to send characters, so decided to add support for special characters which would be shown as images on other handsets from the same company.
Other Japanese mobile companies liked the idea and decided to do their own versions.
Unicode peeps came along to add Japanese characters to unicode to enable global communication.
Japanese phone companies wanted emoji to be added so they wouldn't lose functionality by switching to unicode.
Western companies added support over time.
Racism means that lots more emojis have just been added.
They added freaking wingdings.

Yes, there's even another language that nobody can translate which is represented.

It's so that any character from any language can be encoded. It's understandable from a text sharing point of view, but the emoji don't really fit.

The Unicode committee have a boner for representing any written language that any humans have ever used to actually communicate with each other. There's a real danger that they'll end up having to use Tengwar and Klingon; some people are starting to use those for real communication (instead of as something made up for a book/film).

If you highlight the second to last line just right, you can shift the location of the tennis ball looking glyph to the previous line. That's a trip.

Actually, it looks like it's not limited to just that character, selecting rapidly and dragging around shifts a lot of those characters around.
