Yeah, Materazzi must've said something pretty damn horrible, or perhaps just what was needed for Zidane to finally snap... But really, being the captain of his team, in a world cup final, at 1-1, playing his last match for his country... Charging Materazzi like a bull, head-butting him in the chest. WTF???

It was a sad, pathetic display. No matter what was said, Zidane should have remained professional and just played the game. He hurt his country, his team and his reputation. (And he still got the player of the world cup award!)

I learned something useful from the World Cup, though. Next time I get my usual 50+ link errors in Java, I'll roll around on the ground and scream, see if the compiler will blame somebody else.

Don't headbutt anyone, don't step on anyone's crotch, typical advice that probably shouldn't need to be written down. Did anyone see that photo of Rooney getting his red card? Football = Theaterics + Sports
You need to have the ability to enact situations.
Which explains why the compiler wont blame anyone else. It's not the orchestrator [yawning at the BPEL literature in the other window....]

Let's see if the 'speech' from Zidane tonight, scheduled to 8 PM local time (France, which is, what, GMT+1?) will be another WTF, or actually make sense... Unfortunately I guess it won't be Zinedine's words, really, but words from a group of PR-people.

Part of the rules in football (the soccery flavor) that it doesn't get called if the judge(s) (officials? whatever) didn't see it happening. The headbutt (which isn't [i]just[/i] a foul, its unsporting behaviour) happened on the other side of the field. The main judge (the guy who keeps running around) didn't see it, so he couldn't call it. The guy on the sideline did, however, and after they talked for 4 seconds the red card was presented. PWN3D.

Superb! I've watched it over and over and I'm not tired of it yet. I have to say, though, that the American version is what it might take to get me to watch soccer again.

So Materazzi said he did Zidane's mother and sister in the pooper. Sure, it's a nasty thing to say, but for Materazzi, maybe it was calculated--he knew it would provoke Zidane and possibly get him ejected after the expected response, giving Italy the advantage in the pentalty shootout.
Pretty damn smart of Materazzi, and pretty stupid of Zidane to cost the team the world cup because he couldn't keep his cool.
We always say "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link", so I don't care how well Zidane did all year, his weak link (temper) cost the team the world cup, that makes a pretty weak chain.
