Unable to select any badge
-
I am extremely immense excited about the new Badges future. I have received 33 badges and with the blessing of all on this site, I will increase that number to 100. Any case, I am also puzzled over the "unable to select" any badge. @codinghorror @riking @sam whoever is getting this message, please help me understand this future.

It doesn't appear that any badges can be used as a title. I don't understand how a badge makes sense as a title. What is that thing supposed to do?

Dunno - but I'm in the middle of finding out...

Are you not in favor of showing your badge? Also, is your badge big than mine?

I'm in favor of more bells and whistles. But I don't understand what's meant by "title" here. It seems like a different concept than badge.

I am confused between the word "badge" and word "medal".

Certain badges can be made to appear in the title (i.e. to the right of your username on posts):

No, those are fairly similar, so they make sense to me.
-
Not that I can seem to get any of the FA icons to appear there...
-
Give me @commonsense badge instead.
-
FA
What is "FA." I've seen lots of fa-fa junk in the css or whatever. I'm assuming it's more than a Sound of Music fanboi dev.
-
They appear on the badges screen though:

Font Awsome(™ no doubt)

@Sam - are the icons supposed to display in the title, or just the name of the badge?

I got @codinghorror badge today. If I am being his sockpuppet, then I am a very poor one. I can only wish I am having his money, his looks and his talent!

I think title is too much, can make it optional if you wish
-
I've no particular objection to stuff appearing in the title - I was just wondering if the icons were supposed to display as well as the badge name, or if it was just the badge name.
Empirical evidence from last night suggests it's the latter.
-
I think it would be good to have a small icon, like the moderator trophy.
-
That's not too dissimilar to what I was thinking when I first asked....

Great minds.

Those other forum systems have a habit of displaying little icons for each badge a user has against their poster info block... but that's clearly doing it wrong too.
-
Sorta does it here:
Clicking on avatar in a topic:
http://what.thedailywtf.com/my/badges (presuming that's been fixed - here for where this screencap came from):
-
That's nice and discoverable.
-
Is it what you were talking about though?
-
Not really. I was talking about having all the icons in the space where one badge can be selected right now.
You see, normal forum software has more space dedicated to the user profile on the left/top/right of a post, and the badges would normally be displayed there without needing a usercard, which generally only should be for stuff not needed so often.
I am confused, though, badges even in their present form are gamification and Jeff made it clear he didn't want that...

Well, the default badges aren't really, not if you keep the default's elsewhere (like limiting likes...)

He has expressed elsewhere - and probably here, too - something resembling the following:
Gamification is powerful. Quote from Spider-Man. You want to encourage behaviors that help the community, not hurt it.
Let's look at the proposed and current badges:
- # of likes on a post - Well, that encourages making posts that other people like. Sounds good to me.
- Filling out your About Me (Autobiographer) - well, it helps to know who everybody is.
- # of helpful flags - cleaning up is everybody's job
- shared a popular link to a post - sharing is a great way to get new people into the forum!
Badges that will never happen:
- # of posts - encourages posting as much as you can
-
Filling out your About Me (Autobiographer) - well, it helps to know who everybody is.
Is this one manual around here? I think I've filled out all of my stuff, but I don't have this badge. The only other thing is my title, which I'm not able to fill out with anything.
-
Possibly. But I'm pretty sure it's going to be an official one.
Along with other stuff like first topic, first post, first flag, etc... First self-deletion after being flagged...
We already have "first received like".
-
Yeah, I know it's here. @PJH has it. He's also an admin, so he could have jammed it in there manually. But also, @Nagesh has it, and he also has been given badges to add to his title. Seems like that badge shouldn't require the Title field (assuming that's accurate). @sam?

That's nice. Can we see the spec's so we can prod at them. Rather than being fobbed off like I was earlier when I asked about...
of helpful flags
KTHXBYE.

Ah, yeah, guess it just needed to be jiggered. Thanks.
