Wanting to use my Samsung Note 3 as a dev machine

  • Has anyone turned there phablet into a dev environment for fun, profit and WTF?

  • I've written code on an iPad. I've also been known to SSH into a server and edit some scripts via nano over that SSH connection because I didn't have any alternative.

Also, there is actually a thing for making games on iPad - Codea

  • There's AIDE to made actual android apps on android. On my tablet and my phone I used Linux deploy app to set up a full Linux install to chroot or vnc into locally on the device... I've done java and c compiling with that (using juicessh or terminal emulator and hackers keyboard) for school assignments

  • You could always install mono develop to allow for c# development on your android device

  • We already have one Bad Ideas Thread.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

I've done quite a bit (too much) of ssh stuff from a mobile before. Once one of my web servers when one of the sites got infected due to a Joomla hole, others have largely been work related.

@Frank is trolling better than @codinghorror

  • Ha! I'll take that as a compliment. :)

Jeff is better at fun and profit in the great Internet psychology experiment than myself.

    He's a 10x-er while I'm barely an x-er

    Lol....i Crack myself up.

Wasn't this the whole point of ubuntu edge?

I think its a bit early, but in 4 or so years plugging in a phone to a 4k display, keyboard and mouse will be something that does not sound like sci-fi

Wouldn't vim actually be a saner option in this case due to it's shortcuts? Using Ctrl on anything mobile has always been a pain for me because I have to press hardware buttons that are far from keyboard. I'd guess it's even worse on a tablet, though there you could install some kind of programming keyboard since you (generally) have more screen estate you can use.

Filed under: when you consider vim to be a "saner" option you know something's wrong, I love it but those shortcuts are a bitch to learn, all hail :set rnu

Would that be with or without an external keyboard?

  • Blue tooth keyboard. Mouse? Now there is something I am not sure about.

With terminal emulator app for android, you can bind a volume key to control, and another volume key as a shortcut key (modifier plus L = |, modifier plus T = tab, etc.). That being said, I still would never use nano, but it's great for normal bashing.

Also, hacker's keyboard gives you control, alt, etc. to make things easier (if you have a big enough screen, it's almost usable)

That's what I did, yes. And even with my old Huawei U8300 that has a physical keyboard it's a pain. But the mental dissonance of hitting a hardware key for Ctrl (that's ABOVE the rest of the keys instead of in a lower corner) and mashing on a touchscreen... it really bothers me for some reason.

  • Yeah, but it gives me something to play with while the wife gets her nails done

Wouldn't it be easy to just surf for porn like we all do?

Look even then you can still have something to play with, you'll see.

I'd choose any other option over using my tablet to code, but in a pinch I used to RDP into work on my tablet to fix things if I had no way to get to a computer.
Then they went to an authentication method that wouldn't work with a regular RDP client and pretty much screwed me over. Actually, screwed themselves over, because now I can't fix things when I could have fixed them previously.

Windows 7? I believe there's an option in remote desktop settings, something like "allow legacy login", or "allow RDPv2", or something like that.

Bit me in the ass when I tried to RDP from a Linux machine to a Win7 Home <whatever> version because you can't enable that on Home versions.

I'm gonna guesss there's a registry hack for that but I coudn't be arsed at the time, installe free version of TeamViewer, done what I had to and uninstalled it.

No it's not windows 7, I can RDP to that fine. They decided to choose a proprietary 2-factor authentication system that requires you to have specific proprietary software downloaded for connecting, and there is no Android version, nor any chance of an Android version unless that company creates one.

  • If you happen to have a decent shell client for iOS, the qualifier keys pop up above the main keyboard. Failing that, I've been using nano for years, why make me [s]lose my sanity and button mash[/s]use vim now?

  • Just learning the basics of vim would probably show you why... nano is so limited.

However, an argument for it on android avoid control keys is moot since you have constant dire need the escape key vim

  • But I don't use nano on a regular basis, I use it simply when it's the quickest or sometimes only tool for the job; normally I have files locally and use Notepad++ which I'm sure is just as crippled as vim but frankly I have no desire to get into that particular pissing war either. vim probably is awesome. Same with emacs. I'm quite happy with my not-quite-so-powerful-but-doesn't-require-me-to-relearn-how-to-do-shit systems.

Crap, completely forgot about that. That's what happens when you use something a lot and don't even know the shortcuts if anyone asks you, but sit in front of a keyboard and you use them just fine.

    So, fair point there.

I have that argument with a co-worker constantly, he of "thou shall copy everything using cp and regex". Which is fine, but in many cases I prefer my split-view nemo (nautilus fork) and ctrl+s for pattern select since I can glance at what I'm doing without abusing ls all the time.

    So, fair point there.

Crap, I'm conceding points too much for the TDWTF norm... ummm... <insert product here> SUCKS! There, that should do it.

Edit: Crap, I keep forgetting to < my <s

  • Don't get me wrong, if I'd hit vim some years earlier, maybe I could have warmed to it. I've tried it, I've tried emacs, but I'd long since become set in my ways.

  • Aside from a few people who are way too serious about Watch_Dogs, I really don't see anyone doing anything more serious on a smartphone/tablet than playing $popular_game and watching a movie. When it comes to input, those things are beyond useless.

Filed under: writing stuff for smartphones is another matter, those things are loaded with sensors

  • That depends, with or without a keyboard?

Last summer I went on a trip across the US, I used my iPad with a keyboard to write all my blog posts and upload the pictures off my camera.

  • @Arantor said:

I've never used a keyboard case. I guess it would be fine, but those keyboards don't seem too good in terms of quality - and I'm way too used to my clicky.

Then again, my experience with tablets and smartphones is mostly "fucking hell why does opening SwiftKey take 2 minutes", so I might be a bit biased. They just don't seem suited to Serious Work for me.

  • I use a near full size foldable (note: not rollable silicone, but hard hinged plastic) keyboard with mine.

  • I picked up a Logitech case for that sort of thing, and they build pretty decent keyboards which also functioned as a decent case too.

  • @DrakeSmith said:

    rollable silicone

Those things are the worst of the worst. I bought one, because clicky was too clicky for night work, and couldn't use it for more than ten minutes before wanting to smash it on my desk.

And I couldn't even do that either, which pissed me off even more.

Hm, might be worth checking out. Though it doesn't help smartphones, and I think no manufacturer includes any physical keyboard on their devices (let alone QWERTY) anymore...

Fuck, I remember being able to write texts spanning three standard SMS messages on my W200i out of my pocket in high school. Try that with a smartphone.

  • BINNED

Yes, it's old. Yes, it's slow as shit. But as soon as I get a new one I'm leaving it as a "just connect to WLAN and ssh into stuff" device.
