Poll: How many times should you be caught biting opponents before you get banned from a sport for life?
-
- 1
- 2
- 3
- Unlimited
-
The back-story here is that Luis Suarez appears to have bitten an opposing player during today's World Cup match. If that's what he did it would be the 3rd time in as many years that he's done this. Last time, he was suspended for 10 games.
-
I think once should be enough.
-
I'd go for either once or unlimited. There are other ways to punish than life bans, of course.
-
Wait what? I thought the Red in Uruguay's game today was against Italy.

It was, there was no foul or penalty for the bite.
-
So was it done out of sight of the Ref or what? I doubt that they changed the rules around that much since I was last FIFA certified (though to be fair they are a lot looser with some rules at that level of play).
-

He'll surely be out for at least the rest of the competition once they've reviewed the footage.

It was out of the field of view of the referee, but there's footage that seems conclusive that he, in fact, did bite the player.

Agreed. By the time you are playing a sport professionally, you should enough of an adult to know that biting is not proper behavior, unless you're fighting for your life.

Couldn't find the "I don't give a hoot about soccer" option

Voting's not compulsory you know .

You could have answered like me and been thinking about Mike Tyson.

Ah OK then. Are they allowed to place restrictions on him as the ref couldn't call it? I'm assuming that there is something that could be done, but I know that so long as the ref has their back to you nothing can be called in the game if you shank someone.

I believe that all of his previous bans were handed down by the various FAs which ran the competitions. I don't know the rules of FIFA well enough to know if they have a mechanism to hand out a punishment after a match, but I hope they do. I don't even know if there's anything that's ever occurred that could be cited as precedent (e.g. a head-butt not caught by a ref but resulting in a ban post-match by a committee).

According to the ITV coverage (in the UK), they do have the power to hand out punishments retroactively.
-
Why no "0" option?

Alex Burrows is still a punk.
-
Doh!!!! 42, of course
-
-
I voted for "Unlimited". Sports nowadays are too civilised. Try playing soccer on a field with a couple of half-starved lions. Now THAT would be a worthy sport!
-
Biting should always be permissible. How else can you consume your adversary?
-
Alan Shearer thinks Suarez should be "hammered".
Sounds like a traditional Geordie award strategy, involving moderate celebrations on a Friday night in Newcastle…
-
According to the Daily WTF, 3 bites is just fine:
-
As we all know, it's either zero, one or infinitely many.
Also, you forgot the FILE_NOT_FOUND.
-
TLDR; he's a filthy little git.
Someone should smash his teeth in or yank them out, then he won't be able to bite anyone ever again.
You'd expect a professional player to be more mature than that. How childish do you have to be to think that it's acceptable to bite someone? His parents clearly did a terrible job of raising him.
Filed under: He's got a really cuntish face too
-

I laughed harder at that than I probably should have.
-
That's the TEEF_NOT_FOUND option.
-
If the sport is the world championship of biting, unlimited.
Does the food count as an opponent in an all-you-can-eat competition?

Let's not forget his non-bite based antics last world cup, wherein suarez single- handedly won his team's match against ghana by deciding he was the goalie.
Suarez should be permanently banned from representing his country, obvious cheating on the world stage 2 tournaments in a row is ridiculous.

I think he should be banned from playing at any level. There's no excuse for doing this a third time.

That's not cheating, that's preferring the consequences of the punishment over the consequences of not committing the foul. It's just as little cheating as holding an opponent about to start a potentially dangerous offence, knowing you'll probably get a yellow card. Or speeding on the freeway, knowing you might get fined.
He just did it at a crucial timing. That's clever, not cheating. The biting is a completely different thing, though. I have to admit, I've been a fan of him when he played for Ajax, and he's a great player. Sometimes he just seems to completely lose his mind though, acting on only primal instincts.
The guy needs therapy. Or a frigging anti-bite mask. I don't want him to get banned for life, but I do hope he will grow up sometime soon...I found this amusing though:

Quoth the title:

Since this is the third time he's been caught, it does make you wonder how many times he's done it and actually got away with it.
-

That's a worrying thought, I'd guess that he did it plenty of times when he was younger, and he now somehow thinks that it's OK. Why else would he be so prolific?
-
The longest ban FIFA can apparently impose is 24 matches or 2 years.

His comments on the subject explain a lot...
"These are just things that happen out on the pitch. It was just the two of us inside the area and he bumped into me with his shoulder."
"There are things that happen on the pitch and you should not make such a big deal out of them."
He clearly thinks that he did nothing wrong. If FIFA takes no action he'll just carry on doing it.

If you're professionally out of your chosen athletic field(cough) for 2 years, I don't think you're going to make much of a successful comeback, at least not at the same level that you
leftwere forced out of it at.

Agreed, two years is a long time in a footballer's career. I think that would be an adequate punishment.

According to the radio, FIFA can only ban him from international football, which, if true, is idiotic.

What would be less idiotic? Not banning him? Are you really suggesting that every soccer league in the world should be run by FIFA?

I'm saying it doesn't hurt him enough and that, even if the soccer league isn't run by FIFA, it should be standard practise for any soccer league to ban a player under these sorts of circumstances. I think it's wrong that he can carry on making millions with the example that he's setting.
-
Well, I don't have anything against that, and I wouldn't be surprised if a few leagues followed FIFA's lead, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of them didn't in the hopes of luring him in (assuming he's a good player...I have no idea).
