Reverse downloading!

  • Hey all - new to the forums. My other half reads nearly everything on here and when I showed him this he told me to post it ;)

My vista is downloading negatively :P It started at -1 and now it's on -6% :o

Never seen it do that before - yey windows XP :D :P

  • Makes sense.

As noted in another thread, Vista Beta still has alot of things backwards.

    But wait.

    That's already a Vista dialogue you're showing.

    Or just an XP skin?

  • hehe - I have literally just posted here so not read any other threads yet :) The other half is the techy one, so most of the programming language quips I don't get :D

The skin is an XP skin i'm afraid ;)

  • did the bar actually go backwards the whole time?

  • No the bar was fudged and was at 100% - it was the numbers which went from -1% to -59% before it died because the net connection did :S

  • I didn't notice that.

  • I got negative numbers too when I downloaded it, but I was using an ancient version of GoZilla, so I suspect what really happened is the size of the file was too big and the calculated the percentage wrong due to a flip in the sign....
Though why a download size is stored as a signed value I don't know....

Edit: Just noticed the screenshot shows the correct filesize, so it must just be the percentage parts overflowing in that version of Firefox (that's what it was in, right?) My one had a negative filesize too from memory. And mine got to -13% before disconnection due to overcrowding of the MS servers.

  • Aaah I see hehe :)

Firefox has not, under any of its names, had a download dialog that looks like that.

Internet Explorer, however, has had donwload dialogs looking like that since version 4.0, and possibly earlier.

But still, a file of several gigs -- I bet none of you thought you'd ever download a file like that when you first got internet access.

Oooh... Such pretty graphics! Vista must be a much better OS than everything else!

  • My sarcasm meter seems to be way off the chart ;P

I just like a pretty looking XP is all :P

  • You're right... I was going from memory of what it looked like since I didnt pay much attention to the details of it and didnt have it in front of me at the time.
It's IE 7 then, right? In that case, what the hell is wrong with MS? It's not like they are new to having large files to download....

  • Surely the question should be what isn't wrong with MS? ;)

I downloaded the Vista Beta (3.1 GB) using Firefox 1.0.7, and noticed
the same reversal. If you look at it closely, you'll find that firefox
(this version at least) uses a signed 32-bit number to track how many
bytes it has downloaded. After 2147483647 bytes it goes from 0x7FFFFFFF
to 0x80000000, which of course results in negative numbers. It's my bet
that whatever browser the OP was using does the same.

Ive seen that happen before in Firefox...It was trying to download something cept it was downloading it at a -1mb per second rate to a 15 kb per second rate & then back again. It also said it was going to take 10^8 minutes.
