Oneboxing peculiarity
-
Just want to see what happens if I link to the ellipsis page on wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Should link to Ellipsis onebox
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/......
Should link to Ellipsis onebox
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/`
Should link to %60
I don't even know what to make of this.
The above is actually the character alt+0164, which during one boxing actually encodes my character (%C2%A4)
Also character encoded automatically (%C3%A2)
Again. (%E2%99%A0)

I blame bad regexps.
Especially, remember http://blog.codinghorror.com/parsing-html-the-cthulhu-way/
I believe that's what you call ironic.

Even Twitter and other major services can't auto-link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
I suggest using the non insane alias
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis
-
So the failure of other services to achieve a given task is reason enough for you not to push the envelope yourself?
I believe your stated mission was to improve discourse on the internet. That means not being bound or hamstrung by others' limits, yes?
-
I'll go out on a limb and say it's less about auto linking, and more about /... redirects to /Ellipsis, and you're not auto following.
This isn't a bug report, it's just noting behavior. Sometimes consistent with what I expected, sometimes inconsistent.
-
In which case there's still an issue since I believe in the principle of not violating the Law of Least Surprise. I'm sure there's a more posh name to it but the principle stands; if the behaviour surprises a 'typical' user, something is wrong. If the behaviour surprises a technically competent user, something is definitely wrong.
-
Technical users are actually bad examples, as most have expectations on what to expect. A typical user usually expects something completely different than a technical user.
-
To a point, sure. But on the flip side, just because we can divine why something might be does not suddenly mean our expectations are wildly different.
I find my expectations not that radically different from my users', but that's because invariably I'm a user of the software I build, to some extent.
Yep, I expect everything not to break, and it brings me glee when it does.
Aha. Though I think I'll stick with Law of Least Surprise because I like alliteration.

likeadore alliteration.HTH, HAND, etc.
-
Whoa, steady on there cowboy, I like it, not like-like because that'd be weird.
-
"appreciate alliteration", then?
-
Yes, I do appreciate alliteration, especially effective espousing, when wondering and wittering away.
-
In case you missed it in the other thread... I did figure out how to onebox an ellipsis

Slashes generally don't break link parsers, periods generally do (re first post)
