I'm a happy cat

  • I, for one, am happy that Discourse is here. CS was a real pile of shit, and I hated it with passion. Keep up the good work.

(Actually, anything would be better than CS, except maybe phpBB which is a magnificent pile of crap in and of itself.)

I remember people ragequitting a forum because it changed its theme. I remember people whining on the same forum because it went Unicode one day. They whined because a new section on that forum opened, and whined again when it was closed. They whined about social "share" buttons when they appeared there, and continued to whine over them when they became an option. I doubt those people are worth keeping (unless you are fond of luddite freaks) because no matter what, they will find a reason to whine.

Pagination? O'RLY? Get a fucking grip, people.

    We all are luddite freaks.

  • Then why not move to Usenet altogether?

  • I could get a phone line, a modem, and host a server everyone has to dial into. I have an old Pentium M laptop that would be perfect for it! I think it even has the integrated modem.

  • We could resurrect telegraph just for TDWTF forums.
    Rebuild the infrastructure, etc.

If that's not oldskool enough, we might employ some avian carriers!
And write in Shakespearean English, of course. On parchment.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Parchment is heavy; you'll want to use a homing ostrich as a data carrier.

  • Why not? After all, it would be taking the idea to the limits.

  • RFC 1149 might be useful here.

Anyway. People hate change. We as a group are usually responsible for inflicting change on people and we understand the pain of change more than most (or should do)

The amount of culture shock from CS to DC is enormous. Almost any other forum (heck even phpBB) would have been a less painful move than to DC simply because of the culture shock. The fact that people have been giving it time to get used to and they're not adapting to the shock.

  • Discourse is the bomb. I'm a believer (or shill) whatever...I haven't been excited about forum software before but this application gives me hope. 'Anything' to take market share away from facebook, shitter, and other 'social media' gets nothing but props, notches and marks in my book, because it reintroduces human beings back into meaningful discussions instead of mind numbing broadcasts of how much they love Candy Crush so they can get free in game garbage.

    Social media = Isolation

Filed under: I'm not a shill, am I?

  • OK, I'll bite. WHY does it excite you over any of the other forum platforms (of which there are a surprising number)?

This sounds like a personal problem. I get into lots of interesting discussions on facebook.

  • You are right, it is a personal problem. My wife 'zombies' my FB account for me. I use it when I need to make/test apps.

Other than that I stay away.

  • ♿ (Parody)

My wife and son use my account to play some games, though I typically turn off notifications for any and all games that come across my feed. So I'm more annoyed by people requesting that people stop sending them game requests or else.

The advantage of FB is that the user base is huge, so depending on the friend's stuff that I start commenting on, I never know who I'll end up talking to. Comments work reasonably well, though not as well as a typical forum (including Discourse).

  • There is surprising number because 15 years of forums are baked in. Discourse started at 0.8 (I believe), so that is not even two years of public existence). I like it because it is shiny and new (I know that doesn't necessarily make it better). When I go to old forums, I kind of get depressed (I guess that is also a personal problem, like my FB aversion/revulsion). There are other specific reasons, but I don't want to exhaust people with a list of things.

I guess the biggest thing for me is the mobile interface....I really like Discourse sites on my Galaxy Note 3 display.

So you're not a shill, but a fanboy instead?

  • My discourse site hijnks.com is totally fucked and in shambles right now. I got into an upgrade problem from 0.9.9.5 to 0.9.9.6 (all the asynchronous settings lost their ability to change things (only a few things in the admin sections are post-back to set changes), I couldn't create a new account and generate a topic, the Discourse guys couldn't figure it out/overwhelmed with other stuff). So, I had a meltdown and deleted my Discourse site removed my account information from meta discourse. Cussed and spit mainly because I didn't have the background to fix things myself when it comes to Discourse docker droplet installs.

I calmed the fuck down.. Came back to sanity. Put my picture back and my other stuff back and returned to contributing to conversations.

So it depends on the day of the week the discourse changes/mysteries are released and/or when my man period starts.

I will never take the one click updates with Discourse lightly again that's for sure.

It's like going from a VW Bus to Serenity.

  • Except the part where it doesn't exactly have a driver who's like a leaf on the wind.

And I suppose nothing in the 'verse can stop a certain person's ego?

    Spoiler alert:

    He's dead.

  • That's alright because this is nothing like Serenity.

You can learn all the math in the 'Verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

  • Sam working on the latest commit:

    Commit!

  • River Sam or Simon Sam?

  • I own a Galaxy Note 3, too, and the difference is astounding.

This is a game changer for me. I'm a lot more active now thanks to this. I don't tend to go on a PC at home and I'm too busy to use the forum when I'm at work. Being able to use the forum on a mobile is great.

You could use CS on a mobile, but the experience was quite painful. I'm very happy that I don't have to hand craft HTML on a mobile device any more.

There are some other handy features like how it resumes from your last reading position in a thread. Sure that doesn't work properly all the time, but it will improve.

There are certainly some rough edges to Discourse, but it's already changed considerably in the short amount of time we've been using it. It's cool to see software evolve, and it's cool to be a part of the process.
