Should mod edits be highlighted more?

  • Misfeature: when someone changes my post, no real notification is given and it still appears under my name only.

Possible improvement: it displays all "contributors", like on Stack Overflow

Why this is a bad thing: someone could just as well edit Nazi propaganda into one of my posts under my name.

You were certainly notified of the title edit, edits are notified via the edit pencil glyph.

And revision history is visible to all anyway, look for the pencil glyph in the upper right next to the timestamp. The redder the pencil, the hotter and more recent the edit.

  • Yes, but it's really tiny and not something people would click on or maybe even see. It took me a moment to figure out what had happened after it had already notified me. This might be another philosophical difference, but I think that it should be noticeable at first glance if multiple people edited a post.

Edit: and also the pencil just means it's been edited, it doesn't mean it's been 'adjusted' by someone else.

Agreed. Feature Request: if more than one user changed a post, the "post was edited" div should include small avatars* of all contributors (except the post author), linked to their profile.

^* small avatars like the ones shown in the "reply-to-tab" link. The username doesn't need to be visible, it can be kept as tooltip only.

The expanded diff viewer does show who made the edits. Simply click the pencil icon in the upper right of the post.

  • We know that. The fact that the information is available somewhere makes it a FR and not a bug. We just consider "post was edited/improved by its author" fundamentally different from "post was fixed by someone else"... and the current interface shows exactly the same visual cue for these two states.

You know, Stack Overflow does list the last contributor (and edit time) in that "edited info" area, so maybe it's a useful idea to include more information than just "something was changed by someone at at least one time". ;)

But i think you're getting too defensive. Do you really think this feature would be useless? Because i'm just suggesting the idea be put there on the list of possible improvements, not demanding a "fix this by Monday, or else"...

First request I have seen for this, across a year and a half of working on Discourse, and dozens of different communities. shrug

  • Granted, SO and TDWTF have different ideas on "availability of information" than the vast majority of "discussion forums" that would benefit from DC. So... ok, it makes good sense that this is just a low-priority FR in the grand scheme of things. But remember the users here have their own skewed perspective. :D

I'd like it, too. I imagine it's rare because most mods don't go around putting words in people's mouths.

OK, revised: Bug report: people who aren't me can edit my posts.

You say this a lot. It's like you forget that TDWTF isn't like any other Discourse community.

Edit: Just noticed my u is starting to stick. Time for a new keyboard.

You'll never shoehorn this community in with others. Plus, as mostly developers, there's certain things we may notice mention because we know to look for it, and we know it is possible to fix/modify. It amazes me what some users will assume can't be fixed almost as much as what they think can be added

    (fucking non-nested quotes)

Correct. We're not like any Discourse community and have been quite happy being odd for many years now, please stop trying to bend us to fit Discourse.

    FTFY

By the way, nested quoting doesn't work when you highlight and click "quote reply". It's a pretty manual process.

This is by design. If it worked intuitively @codinghorror would have to roll it back.

Filed under: I wish this was a joke.

  • I get that. I was just pointing it out to @skotl.

  • No need. I know how to do it, manually, but why should I? The software should do it for me which is, of course, what we're all saying.

    Thanks anyway!
