Dream WTF
-
I had a false awakening this morning (dreaming that I woke up), and I recognized it almost immediately because my bedroom wasn't correct. The dream faded and then changed to a Raymond Chen blog entry explaining dreaming using a hardware emulation analogy. I don't quite remember the punchline but it was something like "If the application calls OS.GetCdDrive() and the OS returns an emulated one because it wants to let the real drive rest, the application shouldn't know or care that it isn't real."
I think my brain was trying to tell me "Go back to sleep and don't worry about whether your awake or not."

Where's the wtf?
Also when I have dreams that start in my bedroom, at least when I open the window there's a lot of rocks and a misty mountain pass, plus a tiger.
-
And mine have lately involved racing across a Taco Bell car park in Des Moines. (I have no idea where my brain is getting that from, since I've never been to either.)

Where's the wtf?
I think there are several levels of WTF here.
Instead of dreaming cool things like exploring NCC-1701 Enterprise or manning a BattleMech, or the usual crazy dreams where I'm crammed into a comically tiny car where my head is turned sideways just so I fit and I can't see anything and the brake pedal doesn't work, I dreamed about a blog. And the blog post made sense, instead of being gibberish like text in my dreams normally is. And finally what I remember really wouldn't have been out-of-place on The Old New Thing. Apparently I've been reading it long enough for my subconscious mind to do a convincing emulation of Raymond Chen.

Instead of dreaming cool things...
I had a dream the other night that I was a Godzilla sized monster on a rampage in a futuristic city.
For some reason I was attacking a flying car driven by a robot driver. I was having real difficulty trying to bat the car down, but then some weird HUD appeared out of nowhere and highlighted the thrusters on the bottom of the car as a weak spot.
I promptly beat the car to the ground and pummeled the roof in with my fists and crushed the robot driver. I then woke up.
I don't usually remember my dreams, but when I do they're never usually that weird.

My favorite was realizing that I was dreaming. Suddenly I was a god. I was flying around and making the rain fall in sync with the rhythm of the music.

I've had this once, but shortly after I forgot I was dreaming and lost my powers.

I lucid dream all the time, but it's just barely lucid, basically on the fence between normal and lucid. I usually realize on some level that I'm dreaming but I never quite understand the ramifications at the time. On the rare occasion that I start lucid dreaming and actually have my full intellect and memories available, I almost always wake up within seconds.

I never do, which is weird, because they make about as much sense as hallucinogen-induced psychoses. "Morbidly obese Confucius trying to break into a shed in which you're sleeping", and such.

My former boss once had a dream where he was DJ'ing at a party, and could only keep the music going by doing DBA work. Drop a table, drop the bass.

If I were at that party, I'd SQL inject Rick Astley.

"Last night, I dreamed I was Raymond Chen. Now, am I Chuang Tzu who dreamt he was Raymond Chen, or Raymond Chen dreaming he is Chuang Tzu?"

Here is a short film about your brain.

Worst remake of Total Recall ever

Oh good, I'm not the only one. For a second there I thought it was weird that Raymond Chen made appearances in my dreams. He's a totally cool guy in dreamland, too.

I also go to oldnewthing sometime to read comment.

A while ago I had some kind of repeated-dream-within-a-dream-plus-false-awakening thing where I was aware I was dreaming but it felt like it wasn't, and then I went back to sleep-within-sleep and had a lucid-dream-within-a-dream that I'm still not sure if it was an actual lucid dream or if I was just dreaming that I could control it. It was pretty weird. And cool.

Never dreamed in SQL but have in BASIC, Pascal and DOS. DOS was the weirdest... I had to CD to move between rooms and ECHO to talk. I woke up more tired than when I went to bed.
Also, from the other thread: Put me down for about 6 hours.
-
I had a dream that I was on vacation with my immediate family plus my grandpa. We got to the hotel and the only way to the second floor was a staircase on the other side of a fountain that was flush with the walls. We got to the second floor and our room was locked in three ways: first, a giant metal gate that none of the other rooms had, then a keycard lock like normal hotels, and finally a button that requested hotel personnel open the door for us which said "hotel personnel will be dispatched in...two...hours" and then my grandpa tried to open the door and it said "request cancelled: detected broken rules" and then required a fine to be paid and that we retweet the hotel on twitter.
When we finally got into the room, it looked like a tile-based game. There was a 1-tile-wide entrance with a minecraft-like fence to the left and a wall to the right that became stairs at the end and then the main part of the room was five beds and a table with five chairs. Instead of walls, the main part of the room had giant monitors that showed other hotel rooms.

It's your subconscious mind telling you to kick your Dwarf Fortress habit.
-
Worst remake of Total Recall ever
Of course it is--since Total Recall is involved, you are actually thinking of Demolition Man.
-
and then required a fine to be paid and that we retweet the hotel on twitter
This is honestly the only part of the dream I find unrealistic, but only because a Supreme Court case banned this practice.
-
You didn't find the Portal 2-style world portals instead of walls unrealistic?
-
Nope, they're just fine.
-
...have you seen the movie Paprika? There's a chance your brain will like it.

But one time I realized I was dreaming and had an existential crisis trying to escape the dream. I convinced myself I was in a coma and couldn't wake up. I panicked because everything wasn't real. Wife said I woke up screaming, "It's not real! It's not real!".
-
Have you ever had one of those dreams where you have to use the restroom, find one, finish expecting relief, but it resets and you're somewhere and you realize you need to use the restroom, and it repeats. After a few times, I start to panic, wake up, and need to use the restroom.
-
@xaade I start peeing in my dreams, and don't stop. It'll be like a 10-minute dream of me just peeing nonstop with no breaks. Then I wake up and go pee for real.
-
Goddammit @xaade.

I convinced myself I was in a coma and couldn't wake up. I panicked because everything wasn't real.
I've had something similar, attempting to wake up from a nightmare. I got up out of bed, switched the lights on, and could still see the dream overlaid on my vision. I had to go splash cold water on my face to get rid of it.

:P
It's an appropriate topic.
Yes, but the Official Don't Interpret My Dreams thread is and wouldn't have needed necroing.
-
@scarlet_manuka In this topic, interpretation of the dream is not discouraged. Necro'ing threads is the finest example of the categorical imperative that mankind has exhibited to date.

I never understood the discouragement against necroing.
-
@xaade People who haven't previously read the thread have a lot to get through. Not so much so in a short thread like this, of course.
It also makes it harder to find stuff if there's a non-necro thread on a similar topic. If I am trying to find a post about a dream I recall someone making, now I have two threads to search.
-

This I disagree with.
Unless it's something you read very recently, you already had two threads to search. However, this is just a symptom of our inability to catalog posts well enough to be searched effectively.

Came here to see if someone goes "goddamnit fbxaademac". Disappointed.
-
@bb36e I've had dreams where I'm always in a disguise trying to get through into some terrorist group or whatever and have to pretend like one of them so that I can kill someone inside. I've had this dream occur so many times but it is always the me-in-disguise trying to get through the door. Nothing exciting ever happens.
-

That was the case I had in mind (though I'd remove the word "very"). Chances are I'm not going to remember a post in a three-year-old thread, but one I was reading a week or two ago might very well come to mind.

I think your kernel-space got overwritten by a malfunctioning module with bad string handling.

Pointer dereference error. Well, not error, because pointers are always valid (for varying meanings of "valid"). Apparently Censor wasn't working at the time to stop the obvious nonsense....
