Continuing the discussion from Posting on TDWTF 101:
Blah blah, stop crap building up in pinned topic, blah...

You perhaps ought to mention how to do:
- bulleted
- lists
and
- enumerative
- lists
The “four spaces” thing is what you get if you type/paste in some code, highlight it, and press the “'tis code” button </> at the top if the editor. Like this:
for (int i=0 ; i<5 ; i++) { a[i] += b[i] * c[i]; }
(It's the “standard” Markdown syntax in all these cases.)
Also worth mentioning are:
- Doing small text with
<small>
- Doing big text with
<big>
- Doing superscripts with
<sup>
- Doing subscripts with
<sub>
- Doing keys with
<kbd>
These can be combined in unwise ways
-
You perhaps ought to mention how to do:
<stuff that most people who've used a message board should know how to do, or at least look up>
No. I linked to the reference pages on how to do all that for each of the markup languages I mentioned.
If people can't be bothered following links I provide in order to keep that post as short as possible[1], rather than repeat information better expressed elsewhere, then they deserve to remain ignorant.
[1] And it's still too long IMO. And it'll get longer; I wanted to mention stuff like <kbd>. I may still do, but it'll go at the end where those with shorter attention spans will still miss it.

That's OK. I'm not telling you where to shove it.

On my keyboard
/
isShift + 7
so there's no such thing like Shift+/; but pressing Shift+' (which is?
) works.I think you could instead say "press ?, whatever that means in your keyboard (usually Shift +/)".
PS: Shift + Keypad / won't work.

It was a vague attempt at humour, so I could link to that 'bug report.'
What layout are you using?

This one (PT-PT)
Hmm, I never tried using Alt with my less-than/greater-than key, since it doesn't have any other glyph on it. But now that I did, I got a pipe instead of a slash. That's weird.
I'm off to bed now.

This one (PT-PT)
I've added a link back to here which should give a hint to the joke.
Added a section at the end describing polls while I was at it.

There has been talk of something to do with indenting the code by 4 spaces, but at the time of writing I'm unclear myself on this.
Just as it is over at StackOverflow - open an Answer pane and check the "Code" tab:
To create code blocks or other preformatted text, indent by four spaces:
This will be displayed in a monospaced font. The first four spaces will be stripped off, but all other whitespace will be preserved. Markdown and HTML are turned off in code blocks: <i>This is not italic</i>, and [this is not a link](http://example.com)
[...] If you want to have a preformatted block within a list, indent by eight spaces
(Note that it's the "first four spaces" of each line, not of the block.)
-

And the link was most appreciated. I assume Discourse has a secret "trackback"-style counter and that sooner or later a check for my share of advertising revenue will arrive.

- Mention that ninja edits will auto-update on the screens of other people viewing the thread (likes do this too, but no need to mention it)
- Posts lock for editing after 1 year

Already implied, but I may make it explicit.
Posts lock for editing after 1 year
Already mentioned - penultimate sentence of that para, and deliberately understated:At the time of writing, you may edit your posts up to a year after initially posting. This is the default, and may change.

Cannot reproduce:
Chrome 34 if it matters. Similar behavior under FF 32.0

I've added a link back to here which should give a hint to the joke.
I didn't get the joke because I didn't follow the link to the "bug report". I don't think adding another link will help any.Added a section at the end describing polls while I was at it.
...Is what I was going to say, but then I read the rewritten post and I like it as it is now.

Eight spaces if you are inside a bulleted list already.

Eight spaces if you are inside a bulleted list already.
Bug. Ctrl-K doesn't behave as expected.
Expected: When in a bulleted list, either indent by 8 spaces, or allow a second press to indent a further 4 spaces.
Actual: Ctrl-K either indents by 4 spaces if not already in all cases, otherwise it outdents by 4 spaces.

If you want to have a preformatted block within a list, indent by eight spaces
Missed that bit - my apologies @codinghorror.
I'm guessing, from what I eventually learnt, that this isn't technically the case - it's an extra 4 spaces for each nesting level within the lists that the code appears in.
Anyway, I've finally added an example in there.

On my keyboard / is Shift + 7 so there's no such thing like Shift+/; but pressing Shift+' (which is ?) works.
Same here. And Ctrl+F is screwed up. Luckily Opera also has . for searching, which still works as expected.

Unicode section added. For those that care...

@PJH, some of the info in this pinned post is out of date (e.g., edit window, edit history being visible). You might want to spruce it up a bit when you're back at a keyboard.
