I moved 21 posts to a new topic

I moved 21 posts to a new topic: How do we format code?

Can we move all of the posts that indicate you've moved posts? Into this topic, to keep them organized? (I replied as a new post to save you a click)

Seriously though, stuff gets waaaacky when you do that. I had three like/reply notifications from the prior thread, each of which now pointed to an essentially random post from someone else that I hadn't written or interacted with at all (in one case, that I hadn't even read yet). Very disorienting.

Even if it worked perfectly across the site's current feature set the amount of threadsplitting you're doing would be excessive IMO, but once you add in the effect on the unread list, the notifications, (probably) the other stuff I don't care about like e-mail... it's bewildering. If you're going to keep it up can you mitigate some of the bugs first?

Otherwise it's like I'm talking with a few friends in my living room, and you come in and pick up on a side conversation that's happening in the corner and announce HEY GUYS, ISN'T THIS CONFUSING?? DON'T WORRY I GOT THIS and then before I know what's happening you've kicked over the couch, rearranged the pictures on my wall and stolen 2 of my cats.

The problem is that he's using this forum as part of his bug tracking empire, and that isn't terribly compatible with the way discussions happen around here.

  • Indeed - plus I'm deeply uncomfortable at the thought of someone who has not spent years on TDWTF having the power to divide and split (and delete?) posts on these threads.

How do the other mods feel about this?

But where do you move the posts that indicate you've moved posts indicating you've moved posts?

Or terribly compatible with accepting, documenting and fixing bugs.

  • That's a great idea!

Hey guys, I've moved to Twitter to start tracking bugs with all my software. If you can't explain your problem in 140 characters or less, it's not really a problem, right?

And if people want to raise the priority, they've got to retweet it back at you?

Er, no -- we were having a long 20+ post meta discussion about how to format code here on a topic titled "Bonecrusher needs his catfood". And there was some really good information in there I didn't want to lose.

How would any future users ever find that completely unrelated meta-conversation (and to be clear, by meta I mean "discussion about the discussion software itself"), buried in there?

That has zip to do with bug tracking, it's about basic discovery of information on the Internet.

I'd only generally split on meta categories, when discussing Discourse stuff I am expert on. I wouldn't mess with other categories.

By copying it to a plaintext file along with other posts using this search-box-thingy? I mean, I can't really figure out why they'd be looking for a meta-conversation about how Markdown doesn't make any sense, but...

Oops, I got mixed up with which ones got moved.

Fair enough - thanks for the explain, Jeff.

You know, "basic discovery of information on the Internet" generally involves hyperlinking. But i guess splitting topics works too, thought it's not basic anymore, it's "assisted discovery of information" 😈

Fwiw, keep in mind that out-of-threadtopic quoting won't help with discovery of such reply from the original post.
