CS 2.0 Upgrade Status

  • ♿ (Parody)

In case you were curious ... I've spent half of yesterday on the upgrade and hope to spend half the day on it today as well.

    Tasks:

    • Migrate data to new database This went surprisingly well; just ran the scripts and it was done.
    • Tweak layout - getting there, main difference will be a full sidebar on nearly every page, unlike the hack sidebar now.
    • Add custom features - Haven't yet started, but this includes RSS feed

I have only the data on the test site (location: my basement), but feel free to take a look and see if you notice anything "off" -- http://test.thedailywtf.com

  • Any chance you can change the color scheme to something better?

I personally like the color scheme of the current forum we are using.

  • Oh crap.

Now I have to remember my password.  Because of my unanticipated name change (sorry again, John Smallberries), the "Lost Password" crap doesn't work ...  Oh, well, I'll figure it out.

I have to agree with the request for color change, too.  I'm not overly fond of the "blues" we currently have, but it's better than that green.

  • ♿ (Parody)

Definitely -- that's just the default scheme.

I'm planning on having it look almost identical, though i'm considering going with Red to match the logo. That'll probably be far too much effort though

  • I may regret this, but ...

Does CS 2.0 support user-selectable themes like phpBB?

    Just a thought.

(Yes, I know, then someone actually has to create the themes, blah blah blah)

    Best just recolourize the logo.

    OR

Have some photoshop wizzes here whip up a new one.

AH, BUT, what you haven't noticed yet is that all text has been converted to the cyrillic charset!

  • Я планирую на иметь его посмотреть почти идентичным, хотя я
рассматриваю пойти с красным цветом сопрягать логос. That'll
вероятно значительно too much усилия однако!

  • Why is logo of CS 2.0 a stick figure happily relishing an unhealthy green gas cloud?

  • ♿ (Parody)

Yes, CS does allow for user-selectable skins, however, I do not use this feature.

As far as the logo -- the reason it's red is because it's supposted to the result of a Rubber Stamp. Like, at a code review, someone would stamp a big WTF on your code. Get it?

BTW, would anyone ever buy those ruber stamps? I got a quote a while back for like $12/ea ... with shipping and whatnot probably could get them to people for $15 - $20 ea. seems a bit steep.

It's supposed to resemble a tree. "Branching out" and "Growing Communities" and all of that.

  • The hypothesis of someone committing suicide by inhaling a toxic gas would seem more likely based on my experience with this version of CS.

I would gladly pay $20.00 for one that said "FIND HIM AND KILL HIM"

    Yeah. Makes sense. Nice idea.

Custom-made stamps are expensive, because they can't be mass-produced: you don't buy 1,000 stamps; you buy 2 or 3, and they last for a pretty long time. It involves a bit of manual labour and that's more costly than running the process through a big machine that spits out 10,000 stamps an hour.

Multi-colour staps are even more expensive -- basically they're several stamps layed out in one stamp... thing.

Red Bic pens, however, cost nothing at all. :)

Well, how much time/effort are you saving with that $15-20 investment?  If you have to stamp a lot of stuff, the thing easily pays for itself quickly with faster throughput and a distinct drop in carpal tunnel treatment costs...

As I read it, he was asking "Would any of you buy stamps of The Daily WTF logo?" Now, granted, if you're drawing that logo a lot throughout the day, the stamp's a good investment, but I think it would be a hard sell for him to make money by getting us to buy them for $20+. ;)

  • ♿ (Parody)

HitScan is correct -- I'm asking if anyone would buy a DailyWTF stamp that looks just like:

I'm not looking to make money -- I just don't want to buy a bunch of stamps at $15/ea and have them sit on my shelf. I'd sell them (just like I do the cafepress stuff) at whatever it costs me (minus labor) to do.

  • I would probably buy one, because I collect useless crap like that ...

Don't really have any use for it, however, so as cool as it is, I'd say, don't ...

  • I'd buy one!

  • Ahh... My brain inserted an implicit "why" in front of "would"...

  • You can design a custom stamp for less than that. Here is one place I found:

    https://simonstamps.utypia.com/Catalog.aspx?CatalogID=Main+Catalog&CategoryID=Custom+Stamps+(1905)

(They have an affiliate program, but I don't know if you can create your own 'inventory' like CafePress.)

I was unable to upload the simple gif above. Appopriately enough (for a WTF stamp), a JS alert returned:

    Possible graphic-formats are:
BMP, with 1Bit color depth - black and white
CLP, DIB, EMF, GIF, IFF, LBM, MSP, PBM, PCT, PCX, PNG, PSD, RAS, TIF, WPG

  • Two quick points:

    1) The new forum is missing the "new post" at the bottom of the view-thread page. Can you add it again, please?

    2) I think the stamp would be very useful if it worked on digital files (i.e. Visual Basic source code.) I don't think it's all that practical for paper only. There just aren't enough printed wtf, compared to digital ones. I think the idea of the logo as a real 'thing' is cute, but not practical. Coffee mugs would be much better. They actually serve a purpose (drinking beverages) that is usful in everyday work, and you can still communicate the point by holding it up to peoples faces when they start talking nonsense. Works great in meetings too. When the guy from marketing starts requesting new features, just slowly move the cup to your mouth and shake your head :-)

    You are evil.

There's a physical use for a 'real' stamp - right on the forehead of the offender.

Would you mind reconsider this stance? I myself always, when possible, use dark backdrops because I get severe headaches from staring at bright screens. F.i. I use the white-on-blue feature of MS Word and set all my programming IDEs to bright text on dark backgrounds. Since your system of choise does support user skins, would it kill you to cater to us with, well, preferences for medical reasons? Or at least install an optional dark-background theme? Even my bank's internet service offers a "high contrast" (i.e. bright-text-on-dark-ground) option.

  • ♿ (Parody)

The reason I don't use the feature is b/c I have to make modifications to the skin for TDWTF customizations -- so this means offering other skins would be require those modifications to be made and tested as well for those skins.

However -- I'm happy to "open this up" and provide the source code -- if you (or someone else) wants to make a new skin based on the one I made, I'd be happy to include it. I don't think it'd be a lot of work to do -- mostly CSS, gif, and (possibly, due to my customzations) ASPX changes.

  • If the feature is properly implemented, it's a matter of not turning it off, and making a new skin would require a single CSS file and the right set of images.

Or am I overestimating Telligent's abilities again?

  • ♿ (Parody)

Actually their skinning system is really good -- you can do custom CSS, images, and display templates.

However, since I've done a bit of customization to the "core" and the "template" code, I can't simply plug in a CS Theme that someone else developed without modifying it. I suppose I could take a pre-developed skin and do a diff/merge --- but that's more time than I'm willing to invest.
