Dev server? We don't need no stinkin' dev server!

  • I work for a small web company that is a little behind the times in terms of software development methodologies (I'm trying to get us up to speed). I couldn't help but laugh when seeing this when updating one of our sites:

Guess which file is the dev version:

  • I'd go with <FONT face="Courier New" color=#0000ff>"index_this_must_be_the_file_thats_used_for_production.html".</FONT>

Yep, that would be the one I choose as the <FONT color=#ff0000>*development* </FONT>copy. [^o)]

    ==

    Should've used MOOSE.

  • index.html

  • index_final.html

    No! Wait!

index.htm (notice the lack of "L")

  • I'm guessing it's a trick question. There is no dev file, just like there's no spoon. You guys do all your dev work in public... the engineering equivalent of designing the upstairs as soon as you've finished building the ground level :-)

    "There is no spoon."

  • You're all correct! It's any of them, just pick which one you want. Or even create a new one, doesn't matter! And don't worry about keeping previous versions of any pages, there's no need to. Why would anyone want to rollback changes?

  • I think that, from now on, I'm going to use "spoon" instead of "temp" when I want to hide the fact that something is temporary.

As an added bonus, it'll eliminate the spelling confusion between "temp" and "tmp".

  • /spoon
    /spn
    /spool
    /spune

    Hmm..
    /tmp vs /temp is better :-)
Besides, isn't "spoon" a "The Tick" trademark?

  • I'm going to mod this post up, but I also have a possible excuse which is worth while. Well at least for some...

The index's with dates are possibly changes that the author expected might be reverted back to some day. As for the rest, that's terrible...

Umm, aren't all the _work, _temp and _{date} files an example of
"keeping previous versions" of the pages? My guess would have been
"index.html" is the dev version, and all the others are the poor-mans
version control (or version lack-of-control, as the case may be.... ;) )

A CVS is for keeping previous versions and rolling back. The amount of 'clutter' that fills up our sites (and file server) is ridiculous. And lots of our sites don't have backup copies, we just edit the pages and upload them to the production server. Woohoo!
