Chrome breaking the UI... again

  • BINNED

I updated Chrome today (nice timing guys, a few days after your own site complained my version is too old to fiddle around with your current page title-toy thiggy). And what greets me upon restart?

Nothing wrong, right? Well, let's see how it looked like in previous version (and how it still looks like in Chromium):

Do you see it? I guess Google wanted me to see it, since they both bolded and increased the font size in the omni-awesome-whateverbar.

It's butt ugly, but what the hell, maybe it actually helps people with bad eyesight. But then I opened the menu:

    Again, contrasting against Chromium:

Ok, so it doesn't pick up system icons. Annoying, but why did you leave the space for them then? And ignored my font settings? And left a bunch of whitespace around everything? Is it "everything's a phone" thing again and you're making it easier to tap? Or is it because you wanted to add a fancy effect when clicking on the page indicator in the everything-bar so you just HAD TO write custom menu controls, everything else be damned?

By the way, when did Chrome start switching the focus to the field-formerly-known-as-addressbar when you click on the search field on Google page? I swear, every time I click it at least 3 times before I figure out what's happening. Seriously, I clicked on a thing on a webpage, WHY am I suddenly interacting with browser controls instead of the page?

  • What OS? I just updated Chrome on Windows x64 and nothing changed for me.

  • BINNED

Linux Mint, Cinnamon flavored, so basically modified Gnome 3. At first I though something's broken in either the theme or Cinnamon itself since it's a new-ish project, sometimes it gets wonky, but no, Chromium is fine.

I guess Google broke GTK3 integration or something. It still picks up the correct fonts and colors, but the styling is all wrong.

Umm, you are aware that the majority of Gnome themes are broken (usually because they fucked up the calculation of the metrics) and just happen to work in the few apps that the theme designer actually tried? Maybe this theme is working… but that would be quite remarkable.

  • is it true that you can never truly UNinstall the chrome browser from your pc?

  • FYI, on Windows, the omnibar has always had a stonking huge font, and the menu has always behaved nicely in terms of font.

  • @Onyx said:

First, it's an explicit design goal of GTK3 to break all themes all the time. The only supported themes are Ambiance and Radiance, and even then by default you can't pick between them (and in the distros where you can, by default those are the only two you can pick.)

Second, GTK3 removed system icons as being on-by-default in menus, although still left a gutter for them, because "they're too visually distracting and unclean". Apps must explicitly opt in to receive them. To be honest, consider yourself lucky you still have accelerator keys, as those also suffered the same fate.

Did you actually read that link that you posted? That's not what it says at all. Like, not even close.

if I read too close, then I won't be able to derail the thread. isn't that prime requirement of thedailywtf forums?

Wait... how many versions behind were you?

All the changes you've screenshotted have been made over months.

  • That's called 'stable'. Also known as 'I want to be behind on all the new changes so I can complain about them way after everyone else is already used to them'. Then again, during the integration of the Aura code I noticed mouse cursor state changes temporarily breaking; and Aura being dropped a few times from the dev branch...

... then again Firefox has been doing this since at least 2.0 with the dropping of the 'Places' backend.

(also, hi, I'm new here; wasn't able to register before due to the CS email setup not liking any of the email servers I typically use)

So, I switched the theme to check and... nothing changed. Well, menus look slightly better, but looking at both of them they are the same, just look visually better with Adawaita due to color scheme. The extra spacing that shouldn't be there is constant, no matter the theme.

Not sure if it's Cinnamon default or I set it up myself, but I have icons set to on in menus system-wide. Chrome is the only application not picking it up. On purpose, by mistake, or due to some obscure setting, that I don't know.

Chrome says it's 35.0.1916.114. I'm using Google's official packages and repositories, so if I'm behind it's because their repos are behind. The unstable package seems to be 36.0.1985.18. No idea if Linux builds lag, version numbers lag, or Windows version updates from unstable, and tbh I can't be bothered to check.

    Dang, I'm behind; I'm only on 33.

Is it worth updating? Some of those UI changes look bad.

Keep in mind: Chrome is the last FOSS project I like. So if I lose Chrome, I will be like the main character in one of those 70s NYC movies where the guy's entire family is killed by muggers. I will have nothing left to lose; not even a tenuous connection to the world of the living; any and all decency stripped from my soul.

    Choose well.

    reminds me of this

(It's not 1970s or NYC though)

I seriously didn't notice anything different while using it. Other than the stuff in screenshots that is. Then again, I don't know when version 34 came out. I switched to Chrome full time only recently when stuff started breaking in old Opera 12 to the point it was unusable, so if there were any major changes between 33 and 34 I possibly missed them.

I'm not that bothered myself, and functionally there's nothing wrong with it, but what I can understand is how you get to version 34 and do integration properly, and then suddenly, boom, version 35, broken.

I often notice things like the font in the tabs changes on upgrade. It looks weird for a day or so and then it doesn't. I'm running under KDE and I have the "Classic Theme" enabled. I just turned on the GTK+ theme and it looks a lot uglier than what I have.

They have a blog where they talk about releases. It seems like Windows / Mac / Linux get released at the same time, unless there's some platform specific critical fix. Most releases talk about security fixes and speed and stability stuff. They generally don't talk about monkeying around with the UI.

The most surprising change for me recently was what they did with the new tab page. It now looks like the google home page, plus my recent sites thumbnails. I don't remember which version that was, but I think it was before 33.

Yeah, I have that. I don't care for it.

They also moved "Recently Closed Tabs" to the hamburger menu, which I don't like. I often over-zealously close tabs and it uses to be quick to re-open them.

    Or a stargate*.

    Or a ventilation cover.

It took me a while to figure out WTF a "hamburger menu" meant in terms of a browser. Sounds hipster to me. It just looks like horizontal bars to me. I would not eat dark grey pancakes like those.

Once I realized it was a menu, I assumed the bars were meant to represent menu items.

I hate it, too, but that's why I use it--to hurt people.

  • You should be able to repeat the command for multiple tabs. If you want to open a specific tab (say, the 5th most recently closed one) I think you have to go into your history.

    Even if I ate seafood..

  • There may have been copious amounts of sake involved before the pancake. That might have had something to do with it.

There used to be a restaurant not far from where I work which did everything as gigantic thin (not buckwheat) pancakes. They had both savoury and sweet ones; one of the savoury ones was mixed seafood. (The restaurant is gone now; the owner of that city block decided to redevelop it into something anonymous.)

Not the strangest thing I've ever eaten (that particular award goes to a traditional Chinese banquet I once blagged my way into) but still pretty odd.

  • @mikeTheLiar said:

Crepes and pancakes are different. Please tell me you're talking about a mixed seafood crepe.

If you're talking about a mixed seafood pancake, well, I fear for humanity.

In FF it goes backwards for some arbitrary amount. So if you close, say, tabs 1, 2, 3, 4 in that order, successive Ctrl+Shift+T's will open 4, 3, 2 then 1. A quick experiment with Chrome would suggest it does the same thing.

And Chrome 35 on Linux has broken single dimension maximizing in KDE. Had to switch back to using the system title bar and borders to get that back. Fuck you chrome.

  • BINNED

Confirmed on Cinnamon as well, at least double-clicking the window border is broken, can't be arsed to look for a keyboard shortcut if there is one.

But really, you can't blame Chrome devs, who uses such things anyway, hell, people who use Windows can't even fathom why I'd use Alt-dragging when I have a perfectly good titlebar to fondle. </sarcasm>

I can blame them, because it used to work. And I like having a little extra vertical real estate by not using the system title bar.
