How do I create tag and multiple quote the users?
-
I want to know how to create tags on my posts, so that all the search engine able to find my wisdom quickly.
I also want to know how to use multi-quote function like vBullettin and phpBulletin allow. Don't tell me that the great Jeff Hadwood has forgotten multi-quote functionality.
-
I don't even know how vBulletin's multiquote works, since I click that +quote button and it becomes red and nothing happens.
Here, you select a bit of text, and a quote button pops up.

The tricky bit is that the quote button appears next to the selected text and not in the toolbar with all of the other buttons.

You do realize that there aren't tags in discourse right? We are just faking them because it's fun.
-
The thing I've not figured out is nested quotes ... but I'm assuming that's just a verboten thing in the new forum. Threaded reply and all

No problem. I will fake them too.

@locallunatic you're moist sane person on this site. Thank you.

Are you saying multiple quote or nested quote? Two different thing as far as I know.

It's just multiple > with each level separated by a newline.

Thank you drawmeds, I have solved this puzzle as well.

Ok, this multiple quoting thing is slightly messed up. More messed up than the article comment on tdwtf.com

Be careful. This is only the first of minor details you will find. Rage will build slowly but surely.

I have no idea what you just said.

OK, I understand that now, but that doesn't jive at all with the quote tag stuff that seems to come up when I highlight text and click the quote reply button ....
-
It's just a way to achieve the desired effect. I don't think it's a thing that Discourse does out-of-the-box, as it were. At least, I haven't figured it out yet.
-
OK. I guess mixing the syntax isn't allowed? because I tried and it didn't seem to work.
-
As somebody else said, it's just indentation. Nested quoting doesn't seem to work at all. At first glance, Discourse seems to only recognize the first [ quote] and [/quote] tags, and buggers all attempts to nest them.

Essentially what I was getting at ... the point seems to be that it seems that threading is prioritized over quoting.PURPLE MONKEY DISHWASHER SO THAT THIS POST ISN"T BLOCKED BECAUSE THE BODY IS TOO SIMILAR

I struggle to find a rational reason to allow quoting of quoting of quotes of quotes.
That said, here are the ways to quote a post:
-
Highlight some text in a post, click the "quote reply" button that appears above it. Repeat as many times as you like to multi-quote.
-
Highlight some text in a post, and click the "Reply" or "Reply as New Topic" buttons.
-
In the editor, click the first button, which is "quote entire post".
Note that you can even go to a different topic and the editor will be retained.
We also save regular drafts of your posts, so as long as you've typed for a bit, your work is saved on the server. You could power off your computer in the middle of typing, drive across town to a different computer, and when you load this topic on that computer your half-composed post would appear automatically.
And now, here are 100 ways to love a cat.

I struggle to find a rational reason to allow quoting of quoting of quotes of quotes.
It's extremely common in this community (and we occasionally made a joke out of nesting them 100+ levels deep just to try and break things). Arguments have a tendency to go back and forth and back and forth, it's easy to lose track of who is responding to what in which context and the quotes help everybody stay on track.
Typical example:FOSS sucks.
No, actually FOSS sucks.
I literally just said that.

For context. Without having to click multiple times to see what the grandparent or great-grandparent was saying when the (great-)grandchild said something, that without such context, doesn't mean a great deal.
Here's an example where more than one level of quoting is not only desired, but necessary. On the old forum, nesting could go deeper for good reason (absenting the silly threads where things got... silly.)

This is what quote expansions are for, though. Try clicking the top line above where it says "PJH said", you can click or tap anywhere on that top line.Because

Ohh - look it takes me to the post concerned. Rather than having the context in the place it's needed, I have to keep clicking to keep going back - exactly the point I made when I said:
Without having to click multiple times to see what the grandparent or great-grandparent was saying when the (great-)grandchild said something, [...]
Oh - and now that I'm at the grandxparent, how do I go back to the original post I was replying to to quote further... Erm..

Sorry, I wasn't clear.. click/tap in the pink area, not the blue area:I think deeply nested quoting is kind of an artifact of the older system.
-

Hmm. It doesn't appear to be iterative however, as clicking the Up button is.
For example, doing that to my quote in that post shows the whole post. Where I quote myself - and yourself -, but cannot expand those quotes.
Explain how I can get to grandxparent from an initial quote again - I'm not too clear on this...
-
That's true, you cannot expand a quote, then also expand a sub-quote inside that quote.
We could possibly make that work, but would it really be useful? This is honestly the first time I would have ever heard such a request in over a year of Discourse being a public project.
That's asking a hell of a lot of your readers, to go so many levels deep just to understand what you're talking about.
-

Having given you a real-world example of when it would be, may I ask why you're asking that?

We've managed before without problems - are we that niche of a group?

Literally the first time I have ever heard the request. And I've heard a lot of .. things.
I am not opposed to infinite sub-expansion of quotes, I just think it's really niche.

It's just a common TDWTF forum meme. Some people just want to hold onto old jokes. They'll be asking you to add Signature Guy as a feature next (although that'd be awesome).
I don't know if you've taken a look at our old community server forum for example usage (http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/18.aspx).
Here's an example of the reply joke that people were referring to. One common reply joke is subtly editing the quote to give it a different meaning and saying "fixed that for you (FTFY)".
I'm just attempting to provide some context for our craziness...
-

I would have said that it's asking a lot of the readers to keep the context in their heads without having the quotes.

It's common to have threads that go for hundreds of posts, with multiple sub-threads that come and go and mingle with each other. Is that a common happening on other Discourse instances?

To add to that; sometimes you can have literally a dozen different discussions happening in one thread. It's common for threads to get derailed on TDWTF, and it's quite normal for a thread to have nothing to do with the initial post.
-
Now that I have been led to discover the quote expand feature, I think that's an adequate solution to the context problem, however, UI cannot be judged until it's used.
So we'll have to see.

All I want is a Not Read overview that reliably puts threads with new stuff at the top. Is that crazy?

Uh-huh. You're only just noticing....
-

I find that the "Suggested Topics" list at the bottom of every thread generally satisfies those criteria. At least for me...
It's only 5 threads, but the number could be changed.

I'm still not sure this codinghorror isn't a morbius sockpuppet, because he fits in so well!

This might actually be an interesting test of "the medium is the message". CS's way of working let us construct rambling threads with several overlapping conversations, none of which had anything to do with the OP. I imagine Discourse will somewhat discourage this.

See my comment about (not wanting to) change the group dynamic else-thread/topic/whatever they're called on here.

Yeah, when writing my previous post (to which you replied, and which I would have normally kept a bit of as a nested quote for context), I thought about the "Reply as new topic" thing that appears. So maybe we'll fork sub-threads into their own topics. In a purposefully useful forum where people are seeking answers or help or whatever, that's incredibly useful. Not so much for the free for all that was TDWTF forum.

Is Basswood replying to me?

Explain how I can get to grandxparent from an initial quote again - I'm not too clear on this...
"You can do that! You do it like this! You do it like this!"
"But that doesn't work, how do you do it again?"
"Oh you can't do it. I was just lying to you to be a dick."
EDIT: What the fuck did Discourse do to my post, if I wanted blockquotes I would have made blockquotes. Fuck this editor. Oh. If you just put a pointless space in front of the quoted line it actually shows the quote and, strangely, does NOT show the space. Intuitive.
-

It's the open source philosophy! If you want a feature they don't have, the correct answer is always: you don't really need that feature.
