Make Your Own Software!!

  • ♿ (Parody)

    From Christian Hansen ...

A colleague of mine stumbled upon www.makeyourownsoftware.com
one day, and now we are all regretting the 5 years we spent at university to get our master degrees. Especially when computer software can be made in 3 easy steps, with the last one being:

"Make Your Own Software" Step 3:
Click the "Make My Software!" Button

OK, are you ready for the hard part?  Just move your mouse over the "Make My Software!" button and click on it.

Phew!  I know that was tough.

    You're Done

Out Pops an "EXE File" Which Can Be Run on Any Windows Machine"

  • I wasn't convinced it was BS until I clicked on the "see a picture of my car" and saw a wallpaper that was on my computer a few months ago.

  • Great website! I always wondered if there was a website out there that would fit my 180" tall, 7" wide monitor I accecidentally bought from an artist who seemingly spends the rest of his life in a mental home.

  • <font size="4">Brainstorm Idea #0: Software Creator</font>

<p><font size="3">As you know, this kind of software has generated
millions of dollars in sales ...</font></p>
<p><font size="3"><b>You may hate people who sell cheap, basically useless software to your computer-unsavy friends</b>, but just remember that this
is only one of an infinite number of possibilities.&nbsp; Also,
remember that there are some legitimate uses of cheap, crappy shareware too.<br></font></p>
<p><u><font size="3"><b>What It Does</b></font></u><font size="3"><u><b>:</b></u> Allows the user to instantly
generate the code required to create useless little applications that could be written in basically any programming language with minimum effort anyways and which do stuff 20 other tools already do, just better and for free.<br></font></p>
      <p><font size="3"><u><b>What the User Sees:</b></u>&nbsp; They are given a
number of options (Like if they want to include a free smiley pack or an useful IE toolbar) and they click on
"Generate."&nbsp; The user is then given </font>an "EXE File" Which Can Be Run on Any Windows Machine"</p>

    <font size="3">Easy as can be!</font>

<font size="3">This kind of software is in high demand because most people don't have any idea how to write software.
    </font>

<font size="3">Can you think of any other possibilities?  I bet you can.  Read on ...</font>

<font size="3">How to Create:  Most people don't realize that free software is widely available on the Internet.  Finding some that you can basically rip off and then sell couldn't be easier. This Software usually has a number of options or "variables" that an end user can tweak.</font>

<p><font size="3">With "Make Your Own Software," all you have to do is
identify these variables and put in a special tag when you find one that
you want to allow your users to change.</font></p>
<p><font size="3">Then you click on "Make My Software!" and an exe file
(an executable Windows program like Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, etc
      ...) is created for you.</font></p>

    I have one of those.

Tacked to the side of the office building I work in.

The guy couldn't even take a photo of his apartment building--the photo is an artist's painting--probably used for some kind of city planning or something.

  • As a professional software developer, I find that I also:

    • Have a chair in a room in my domicile
    • Have a view out the window
    • Have an electric piano, any number of electronic musical keyboards, and at least two guitars (actually, I have 3)
    • Own a car

Now, Mike Chen wants to make this available to anyone with just the push of a button?  (Jet-SON!)  I'm appalled, on so many levels.

    [H]

  • Gee... I wonder if you could build an HTML to PHP convertor with that... evil chuckle

  • A Subaru WRX is his dream car?  AND he traded in a "hunk of junk" AMG Mercedes for it?  An AMG is worth 2 or 3 WRX's.  I mean, they're nice cars and all (sure beats my Neon RT all to crap), but...

  • This is ridiculous...though I would love to see what a 'recipe' looks like, and try to make something with this package...not that I expect it to work though.

Personally, I'm a Dodge Aries man...

Holy crap, this is hilarious! I really want to try it out, if it's $20 or less.

Can anyone recommend a good secure throwaway email address provider, and a way to pay anonymously? (I don't want to ever touch this guy beyond the one transaction; no signups for every marketing campaign ever known to man, thank you.)

Sure, you can send me a check to my PO box (which I can provide off-list).  Make sure you make it payable to me, my name is Cash.  I'll make sure to send the money to the software maker, er, anonymously, for you.  right.

    "Cash" as in "Clinton Ash"?

(You're the one making the BOFH references here.)

  • You can pay $197, so I guess it's real....although you have to take the "quiz" to see if you're qualified to use the software.  Anyone rich out there willing to take a stab at this?

  • From the site:

Some of the greatest fortunes in the world were made in software.
    Bill Gates
    Ross Perot
    Mark Joyner
    Steve Jobs

And they all used Klick and Play Make Your Own Software?  I had no idea!

Explains a lot about MS Office though, doesn't it?

Send yourself a Gmail invite (you've got 47 left!) and go down to your local bank for a prepaid "gift card".

  • So it's ... a glorified template engine? I'm astonished!

    ----

I would guess it's a basic compiler :P, so a recipie is... (i will leave it as an exercise to the reader).

But i must say this is one of the best parody sites i've seen in a while. If it is REAL, im speachless.

  • Where is the testimony from the guys behind CommunityServer?

  • Well... whatever, I'm game. I don't mind using my name to expose this fraud. If every WTFer donates a dollar we'll raise the required amount in no time. We could do a "who finds the biggest WTF in MYOS" competition :D
Anyone interested in doing this? Mail me at marijn AT monomelodies DOT nl if so, see if we can work something out. Heck, I'll even boot up my old Windows PC just for the occasion! >:)

  • Did you just realize that makeyourownsoftware.com is an alias for makeyourownheadache.com as well?

  • Just scrolled down a bit, and found this example user:
College Student Creates Software and Makes US$11,859.00** in Profit in 48 Hours

    and in the text:
Wednesday I received the beta copy of 'Make Your Own Software.' Thursday in class I had an idea for a product called 'Salesletter in a Box.' (salesletterinabox.com)
Although that url was not linked in the text, I just opened it up for fun, and had that strange feeling that I saw a similiar site before. Oh, right - it looks like the small brother of 'Make Your Own Software'.

I wonder whether both sites are run by the same person..

  • Cool, so pre-Tags work at least kind of.

  • Reminds me of the Jimmy Sweeney Cover Letter Creator!!!

  • This may be my favorite part:

Just a few times in our lives, we get a "Great Idea."  This was one of mine ...

<font size="3">This great idea was nothing short of a method for creating a software program that wrote other software programs.

    </font>

Such a revolutionary idea in fact, that an entire industry is based on it... C++ compilers, Java virtual machines, scripting languages, ZZT OOP, etc.

  • This whole thing sounds freighteningly like Visual Basic.

  • It's an e-book compiler. So what?

  • @Noam Samuel said:

I'll tell you what, I'm guessing it's written in VB itself. Or some other high-level language that requires little or no programming skills itself.

I'm guessing that it's not written at all (I doubt anyone ever
receives a product).  Or if it is (so that he can't be charged
with a crime), it's a graphical front end to a compiler, or some very,
    VERY high-level scripting language.

Besides, just look at his wonderful Word doc---I mean, "web page".  I'd just LOVE to see his code...

  • Wow that's shitty. As far as I can tell it's an HTML "compiler." Since I "qualified" to purchase it (I'm not that stupid, so no screenshots or review. ;) ) I saw on the order page that it's "Literal Mode" uses JavaScript.

The whole scam also goes by different names and cross spams itself on dozens of blogs and "review" sites. It's either also called or closely related to "Instant Software Builder" which completely spills the beans, and even finally shows some "recipies" (i.e. regular HTML with simple regex replacement "variables" ) There are also free examples to download, but I wouldn't dare run whatever unknown shiteware that comes with them.

The fact that it's so well spammed around (Amazon.com has reviews even, written by a professional shill) means that they have to be making some money on this. It makes me sad ... that I'm not getting any of it. :( (OK, and that it exists, but still, a check would dull that hurting a bit. :D )

  • lots of similar shit:

    hxxp://www.sellingwhiz.com/

    hxxp://www.internet-promotion-software.com/auto-blogbuilder/

    hxxp://software.secrets-exposed.com/

    hxxp://www.creating-software.com/

    hxxp://www.makeyourownsoftware.com/

    hxxp://www.instantsoftwarebuilder.com/

    hxxp://www.amazing-cover-letters.com/

They have to make lots of money from these tricky pages. I'm sure there are lots of (stupid) people buying stuff like this...

  • I know there's got to be humor value in it, but I'm actually afraid to look closely enough to get to it. I could be blinded!
