Finaly a Front page WTF worthy of the title

  • Not the actual article itself though, just the new coments system,

    looks appaling

    Works atrociously

dosn't even give a simple route back to the man page

this should becomce course material for all web design classes as an example on how things should not be implemented

I hope this is not an indication of the type of design that goes into build master

Ah - I see that those who only frequent the articles have finally been introduced to our world of pain...

The first post in the thread has a link to the article.@ip-guru said:

Different developers. Jeff Atwood is to blame for the new commenting/messageboard system.

Welcome to Discourse. To your left, infinite scrolling. To your right, our bug collection.

For an extra fee of just $5 you can get a guided tour through halls of WONTFIX.

    Enjoy your pain.

  •  Just gotta do some layouting and it'll feel right at home, I think.

Hmm - one (minor, admittedly) thing I like about Discourse that is missing on here is a like button...

  • BINNED

This is CS. I'm pretty sure we can figure out some kind of XSS that adds a like button using JS and then SQL-Injects it into the DB.

You're talking about /. beta aren't you? Please tell me you are.

  • Yeah, and even more fun, if you don't post very often (like me), you have to recreate your account in the new system.  Not a big deal, but somewhat unexpected.  One would think that Alex would migrate all the accounts, not just the frequent posters, as he told me.

The import didn't work super well (name length limits, characters being not allowed, and so on) and was mainly intended to keep people from doing things like camping blakey's name as the amount of hissy fit he would pitch over it would probably caused someone to do it.

  • I also have avoided it so far, and the new experience hasn't made me happy. It'll be quite a lot of fixing before it gets acceptable. Changing layout and interaction (UI/UX) has always been a successful tool to drive away people.

As if blakeyrat pitching a hissy fit was ever something that we really worried about.

Are you saying that I need to post more?

  • I can't actually use the new forums.  I lurk here at work, and work enforces IE8 only.

I just get a big yellow bar that says my browser is too old.

If you force IE to lie about what it is then things may brokenly show (well more brokenly show than if you could use a modern browser). If you only care about lurking then turning off javascript may also be advisable as that supposedly will get you paging vs. infiniscroll. Though taking a bunch of steps to read the stuff "people" (using the term loosely) post here is probably isn't going to be worthwhile.

  • I'm glad someone pointed out that the new forum floods out your browser history with utter rubbish, as I'd not spotted that yet. I'm not going to have anything to do with Discourse as a result — not even read it. It's bad enough that Google Translate violates your history in much the same way.

Discourse also allows the same post to appear more than once on the same page: if you select to view replies to a post below a post, you'll just end up reading the same posts all over again as you scroll down. What sort of crazy mind does it take to conceive of something like that?

  • The other thing I hate is that is unusable in mobile devices as I can't see what I'm typing when the keyboard is up and that your preferences don't get saved... seriously? Did they test this shit
at all or it was Jeff jerking off to his awesomeness enough?

Then don't open the inline replies.

  • There is a bug thread on the new comments system. You should air all your grievances there and Jeff Atwood himself will look at it and take to heart every single objection you have.

  • Makes Community Server look good. WTF?

  • I've never had problem viewing a site from my BB 9900. Somehow discourse just shows an empty white page. How do you screw up browser support so badly?

    You forgot the <sarcasm> tags.

Which reminds me - I may just move all the deleted posts to another thread and then undelete them....

That's hilarious. It's also reassuring to know that I'm not alone in battling with a nightmare product.

I would have to agree with PJH. It's all too easy on a forum to write something that people appreciate, but they don't have anything meaningful to say in return. The result is that you think that you're being ignored, when you're not. Of course, if you really are unwanted and are better off dead, you can confirm this for yourself by affirming that nothing you say garners any likes ;-)
