SharePoint Hosting Companies

  • So my company was asked to implement SharePoint on a pretty restricted budget for an organization. The hosting provider was, primarily, chosen by $/user/year (by the client) after an initial search for options, so you can imagine how this is going to go. The list of WTFs I've run into is as follows:

    1. There is one, and only one, administrator. Need two people to do admin stuff? Share the username and password (this was actually their suggestion to me)
    2. Users need passwords? Email them!
      1. But first email them to yourself because, though you can change the to field it only works if you send it to yourself first and THEN forward it to the user
    3. Users need to change their password? Too bad! The only one who can do it is the administrator, and there's only one of those!
    4. Want SSL? Oh, we need to delete and recreate your SharePoint ... and we're going to delete all those users you have. Sorry!

I'm not really sure why I was expecting this to go any better .... Maybe that's TRWTF?

  • In a world where Office 365 exists, why would you purchase anything BUT?

  • Considered Harmful

I started reading this in Movie Trailer Guy's voice, but I was disappoint.

Now I want to see an Office 365 honest trailer

Only now do I see that it could be an insult to Office 356, but that was not my intent. I have no opinion about Office 123.

They didn't want to spend $4/user/month ... unless I misunderstood the licensing, that was too much for the planned 150 users, especially since they didn't really need anything beyond SharePoint Foundation. They preferred the unlimited users at a fixed hosting cost which was less expensive (read: crappier). FWIW, they're getting what they paid for and they know it - I've been completely transparent about the issues and my agreement with them is time and materials and I provide a lot of documentation about work performed, especially when it relates to problems like this. Despite the stupdity, they're probably still saving like $5K overall in implementation dollars. We'll see what the cost becomes when they get hacked ....

That's wonder of spendthrifting yourself to the poorhouse.

Because their first-level support is a bunch of idiots. We use a lot of Office 365 services beyond just email and Office and we are constantly underwhelmed by the quality of service, both at a technical level (CRM down for an entire business day with just a shoulder shrug) and customer service level.

Their mail servers block any new IP address they've never seen before, as a matter of course. They then lie about a 24-hour response in their automated e-mail when you report it, as they seem to invariably take four days or so to do anything.

The best bit is when you ring them, and it's beyond the comprehension of the script-reading imbecile that it's possible to report a problem as (or on behalf of) the IP address owner, instead of a person with an Office 365 account who isn't receiving the message.

It wasn't the excellent support that I thought people said you got with Office 365.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

That sounds like the sort of support where you get a court order and call the bailiffs in earlier rather than later. Saves much time, effort and expenditure on your part.
