What.TheDailyWTF.com -- Discourse site

The new forums are about done! http://what.thedailywtf.com/

You should be able to log-in to imported account (just do a "forgot password" thing), or create a new account.

The styling isn't done, but hopefuly that will be the easy part. he hard part was geting the article comments (with feature comments, etc) to work.

  • It says my username exists, but resetting the password has yet to do anything.

  • I'm still waiting for the "email with instructions on how to reset your password" I should receive "shortly."

  • @HardwareGeek said:

I haven't gotten mine either.  Although I did just receive an email called "[What the Daily WTF?] Digest for 05-19-2014" which i have never received before.

I see things are working smoothly as usual.

  • No Google/Yahoo one-click login? You manually disabled it. Why?

  • Finally got the email. Thunderbird thinks it is a scam, because the link goes through some click tracker. It has the real URL embedded in the tracker link, so I entered it manually; that works just fine. The password change page has only one entry field — no confirmation that you typed it correctly.

ETA: And there are no articles to read. I thought they were going to be copied from the old forums.

Weird, ok, i wonder why the email isn't working?

It does send me a password reset.... has ANYONE gotten a pw reset email?

We just imported the usernames direclty in the database... anyone have any idea what we might be missing?

I guess I did that for testing purposes.

    Should I enable this?

I just tried it and it worked, so the reset email may be ending up in spam for other people.

    Just worked for me.

  • I guess we're limited to 10 posts a day? It tells me to check back in 23 hours..

To answer your question over myah because I can no longer post: to selectively quote just highlight the text and there will be a "quote reply" button.

Thanks. That is useful information that might have taken me a while to discover on my own.

My password didn't work and no reset mail for me yet either. And I looked in spam but there's a chance that I am TRWTF and I'm looking in the worng mailbox(es)...

Well, we're getting close to the 51 post mark where CS would normally say "I am going to ignore the previous 50 posts and put your post on a separate page with no context"

Are you serious? You find pagination confusing? Endless scrolling is a hundred times worse. This is so broken. Every time I scroll back down it thinks it's the first time I've seen the bottom post. And there's no way to jump to the top or bottom directly.

Endless scrolling has to be the biggest WTF of modern software design.

Edit: And endless scrolling perfectly replicates the experience of OSX, where the Home and End keys don't work right. Yay!!

Yes there is. Look in the lower right. There's a box that has up and down arrows. Try clicking on them. We've been over this several times.

If you hover over the arrows, it tells you the keyboard shortcuts, which are "home" and "end".

Endless scrolling has to be the biggest WTF of modern software design.

I thought they weren't going to put this bullshit live until the endless scrolling is gone.

Also I can't believe people are actually USING the new forums already, goddamned. Now I have to figure out how to get it in my RSS reader, I'm sure that'll be pleasant.

  • @morbiuswilters said:

I hate to say anything positive here, but I have to say "End" works for me. So does Page Up and Page Down, shockingly. Although the scrollbar thumb jumps around like when I feed my cat meth.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Looking at the Discourse site, it seems they consider the endless scrolling one of their killer features. So I don't know if it's even possible to disable it. And it's written in RoR (motto: "Anemic featureset over configuration".)

But Home does not work. So it's 50%, which in FOSSland is an A+.

Yeah, the scrollbar is completely useless. They should just disable it completely. If you're going to break core web functionality, at least disable it so people don't think that it actually works or something..

  • @morbiuswilters said:

Ooop, you're right, I spoke too soon. It works if and only if you start at the top and read all the way down. If you start somewhere in the middle, Home's busted as shit.

  • @morbiuswilters said:

Oh yeah. RSS is just a techie thing for techies.

I'm really starting to hate this asshole.

I was a big fan of his blog in the early days, mostly because he wrote about things from a real-user perspective and often was a bit of a n00b to tech stuff.

Then he started Expert Sexchange rip-off and went mad with power. He went from trying to understand technology to just making broad, senseless proclamations. (Like when he said people shouldn't use transactions with SQL Server because he couldn't figure out how to keep his code from having deadlocks.. Instead of trying to fix his shit, he just said "Transactions are bad, derp"..)

  • @morbiuswilters said:

It certainly makes me feel like killing someone.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Seems to be random too. I pressed Home once from the bottom of the page, and it jumped up about 30 posts. Pressing it again it went about 10 more posts. WTF?

Also, wasn't there some mention of making it look "kind of" the same as the old one? It's nothing like it. Just because every other Tom, Dick and Harry is making things look like Microsoft's Modern Vomit GUI does not mean it's a good thing.

Another forum I used to visit made a similar error a couple of years back, and it died completely. From hundreds of posts a week to nothing, overnight. And a tech news site I read used to get a dozen or so comments on each article, but after a change in comments system, they get nothing.

Please tell us all this was a joke and an example of how not to implement new software.

I tried around 3 hours ago. I'll wait a bit longer.

BTW, how does one search through the threads on the new forum? Ctrl+F doesn't work, because things that are off-screen (including posts above your current position) seem to unload for some reason...

    See: endless scrolling.

I suppose you're restricted to the search function. That said, in this respect it's not too different from a multipage thread on here; if you're on page 2, you can't use Ctrl-F to find stuff that's on page's 1, 3-∞. It's just that the range of posts you can actually search is a lot more restricted.

  • I haven't even tried to visit the new forums and they've already given me cancer. That's pretty impressive.

p.s. y'all who think that making the post after yours have a speech bubble is funny/cool, kindly fix your dumbass JavaScript CSS so it doesn't render floating speech bubbles if you're the last poster in the thread/page.
