"Virtualization" versus "Enterprise"

  • Is "virtualization" the new "enterprise"?

  • It's not a replacement, it's an enterprisey enhancement.

  • I would say no.  Virtualization is a bonafied useful technique for system architecture, while enterprise is an obscenely vague buzzword.

  • I guess virtualization is like EJB - a usefull (within its domain) technology that will be horribly abused because it is trendy.

  • It takes real skill to implement a virtualisation system... any idiot can over-use XML! :-D

  • What happens if you try to virtualize the enterprise?  I bet this will result in a catastrophic deadlock of epic proportions.

  • If you are talking about things like VMWare and Virtual PC then it's no WTF at all, it's great technology that allows us to have a bunch of different environments set up for development and various types of testing, all without having to worry about complex configuration or shared third party components or versioning between projects.

Basically we get much greater use of our hardware during dev and testing.  Prolly wouldn't use it in production though.

Soem kind of virtual fractal/Droste paradox effect that will suck up the IT economy, like filthy bath water though the drain.
