Predictive text on Windows phone

  • A while ago I had a moan about the crapness of XT9 predictive text on Android. Since then my HTC Wildfire has been replaced with a Nokia Lumia 520 Windows phone. I have to say I'm impressed by the predictive text on this phone. Not only does it make good guesses at the current word you're typing but it suggests the next word based on the previous one.

For example: If I type "I" it predicts have, think, am, was & can. If I don't want any of those and hit "w" it suggests was, would, will & want. It actually appears to have been thought about from the end user's perspective and it works well. The fact that this seems noteworthy is TRWTF.

  • I have a Luma 920 and was also really suprised by the quality of the suggestions.

It is much more fun to write longer texts on the Lumia, and I do it frequently.

Whereas my Sony Xperia ARC S was a catastrophe: the suggestions where crappy and they took ages to appear...type a wort...wait a second...type...wait...ARRRGHHHH!!!

  • You could have downloaded swiftkey keyboard on your android and done that ages ago. Now, of course, nearly all android keyboards have copied the predict next word feature, including Google's own keyboard available in the play store.

Not to mention that the Wildfire is a few ARM iterations behind, so of course a newer Windows phone will feel insanely better. You're not exactly comparing apples to apples there.

  • Windows Phone is the best phone OS right now, with one caveat: if you don't care much about apps.

Fortunately, I don't give a flying shit about apps. I just wish Microsoft would change their marketing, because they're been playing the stupid "number of apps" game and it's hurting them-- if the only metric people use to buy a phone is the number of shitty apps, then of course nobody will buy Windows Phone. So why is MS flogging that? Idiots.

Obvious, you haven't used Samsung Galaxy Note phone.

  •  I was recently thinking about WP text suggestions. I assumed it learned a bit about the most common words you use together, so I wondered if by continually picking the first suggested word over and over, you could make a sentence that sounded like something you would actually say.  In my testing, it typically was a little unique, but then eventually ended up in the same pattern.

    For example, starting with "I":

"I'll be there for me to be a good day to all the time of the most important thing I have a great day and night and I will be a good day to all the time of the most important thing..."

    Starting with "K":

"Known as the article below the poverty line including of those under age and over there were males and females are you doing today and I will be a good day to all the time of the most important thing..."

    Starting with "C"

"Can be used to be a good day to all the time of the most important thing..."

    Starting with "F"

"For the first time in the world to me that you are a few days ago and I will be a good day..."

This is not what I sound like, so I guess my hypothesis failed.

  • But.. did you have a good day?

  • I really like my Blackberry (Z10) but, like Windows Phone, I would never recommend it to anyone. I don't care about apps, services or integrations so both OS' are right up my alley, but everyone else in the entire world is.

Careful. You're mighty close to resetting the undo stack.

The proof of that is actually not in producing a sentence that sounds like you, but rather in changing the predictions. So if it originally predicts "will", "want" and "have" after an initial I, and you use "think" more than one of these three, it could replace the least frequently used.

However, if you chain together most frequently used word pairs, you end up with generic sounding garbage. English is a bit more forgiving than other languages to this kind of language model, so it'll still look half decent. Here's a phrase made up of some of your postings using bigram:

Not enough swearing, but yeah, it's not bad.

I think the key is finding words that you prefer for expression.  I was on GlassDoor and a lot of people were bitching about my employer.  There was also one rebuttal posting from a "manager".  I chose some unique words from the manager's posting and searched my emails for them.  Only one executive used those words.

My thought has been stolen.  Or else I remember this from a while ago.  Or great minds think alike.  Or I should hang my head in shame.  Or I could point out that my thought was completely different because it was for Windows Phone.

That's front page material, right there!

Because there was no swearing in the 10 or so posts I copied. You should swear more.

For words, simple models are quite fine. They also do better on a small, well selected subset of your text.

Given what the majority of people have the gadgets for, that's one hell of a caveat. (Yeah, the apps they mostly seem to care abut are stupid mini-games. So?)

I assumed the built-in predictive text was it and didn't think to explore the app options. Saying that, my phone had a piddling amount of internal memory and never seemed keen to install anything to the SD card. TRWTF here is probably the low-end phone that work provided but I don't really care enough about phones to know which are good and which are not so good.

    +1.

I have a windows phone (920), and it's the first that does not make me want to smash it against the wall.  I wish i bought the 925 but i will wait for wp 8.1 then trade it in for one of the newer slimmer nokias.  Tried Apple, Motorola, Samsung.  I think the lowest point in smartphone ownership was the samsung (an s4 mini), god i hated the modifications that they have done to andriod.  Sheesh, talk about how to wreck a user interface - you would have thought there would be someone in the development meetings saying "STOP".

I love my Galaxy note 2, but my new model Nexus 7 is my favorite mobile device I've ever owned/toyed with. I think I may stick with Nexus devices from here on out (which means bye-bye Verizon, which is also a good thing)

  •  I do sometimes wish my phone had Powershell.

That's really pretty much the only Windows-related thing I ever wish it had, but I suppose if I actually tried using a Windows phone I might come up with more. However, I don't have a contract and I only use unlocked phones, which makes trying out WP8 just for the heck of it a bit of an awkward proposition. I'm waiting for the Neo900.

You can generally pick up a Lumia 520 for about US$100-$150 unlocked (Amazon have a few). It won't scream like the Lumia 1520 (nor as it as stupidly large) but it will certainly run rings around any Android phone at that price point.
