Tivo has massive layoff

  • It is being reported that Tivo has laid off 71% of its engineers. Yes, that's right, they have laid off 5 out of their 7 engineers.

According to sources within Tivo, most of the hardware team has been let
go. So far, that’s five employees. A skeleton crew of two engineers has
been retained to handle support for current and upcoming third-party
    devices.

They only had 7 engineers to begin with?

You forgot the 153 salesmen - sorry, sales executives. You know, the people no company can manage without. Plus, of course, the bean counters and "C-suite" people (or whatever the in phrase is, ICBA to keep up these days).

    See any DIlbert cartoon.

  • Not sure what the 153 salesman/execs whatever had to do with 5/7 of the engineering department being fired.

Guess the WTF in this thread is your post.

It's a joke. Someone said "TiVo only has 5 engineers?". The reply that they only have 7 engineers, but they have 153 salesmen, because that's what everyone needs.

It's funny because many of the less intelligent directors would see keeping 153 salefolks and cutting 5 of the 7 engineers as a good thing- Because the sales team brings in money by selling stuff, but the engineers cost money.

However, in reality, even if you have the best salefolks in the world, if you cut your engineers your product will stagnate into crap, you'll earn a bad reputation, and no one will buy your product no matter how many salefolks you'll have.

There was a subtle clue included by referencing "Dilbert", a character in an obscure comic strip written by Scott Adams (No relation to Douglas, that I know of). This comic often poked fun at similar business decisions in a modern office.

  • I hardly find Dilbart obscure. It is one of the most known comics.

Really? I've never heard about Dilbart. Is that some spinoff where Dilbert ends up in the graphics design team?

    No relation to Richard either.

Dilbert/HHGG/Watership Down mashups will now be entertained.
