Microsoft has a very...interesting...way of ending the Windows Vista trial period:

I'm just glad I didn't have the computer set to reboot on BSOD.

I suppose sticking the trial check in the kernel is the only way to prevent it from being cracked make cracking it harder.

It's pretty ridiculous, though.

I'd say it's actually a pretty good idea. there's nothing you can do from a BSOD, but if it just threw up a message while still in the OS, there's a possibility that an enterprising hacker could work around the 'problem'.

Because there's no possibility to run that system in some kind of sandboxed environment... That would be called Virtual Machine probably, or something like that if it existed...

It's not new, they've done this with all the NT trial versions, so far as I can remember.

Followup WTF: I rebooted today, and Vista's working again.  Did they use == instead of >= or something?

I think some of the Server trial versions crash after one hour of uptime once the trial period has expired, or something.
