More Google nonsense

  • I needed to switch to a different YouTube account to post something, because I have separate personal and business accounts. This is the screen I was presented with when I navigated to the login page, AFTER ALREADY SIGNING OUT OF MY PERSONAL ACCOUNT!! WTF does it remember my username, and why can't I just type in the username of the account I wish to use?

  • We already have a thread about this.

Also, thanks for breaking the quick reply button.

  • Why don't you just use the "switch account" feature? You don't even have to log out.

I didn't know it existed or how to use it. I'm used to sites actually signing me out when I sign out.

So, if I may translate this for you-- what you're saying is-- "yo, dawg, we herd u liked signing out, so we put a signout screen on your sign out screen so you can sign out when you sign out".

(My English-to-tired meme is a bit rusty, so I may have gotten that wrong)

It's a feature that has only existed for several years now.

  • I was just on YouTube and this popped up:

Doesn't work.  Recently "inherited" a used tablet that had been used by, let's say "Karen" to access Google plus features.  I finally managed to log in as "da Doctah" and it was still showing me "Karen"s Google Play, Youtube and other related settings.  Tried to delete "Karen" from the tablet.  Thought I had done so.  Logged into Youtube as "da Doctah" and it shows me as "Karen" again.  Tried to switch to my own account.  Finally got "da Doctah"s screen name and password in the re-sign-in screen and it tells me I'm logged in as "da Doctah".  Go to Youtube and once again I'm "Karen".

I think I've finally expunged "Karen"s existence from this tablet, but now I'd like to download some live wallpapers from Google Play store and it refuses to let me register the tablet there as a device.  Downloaded one wallpaper and instead of it showing up on the tablet it told me it had queued it for my (only) device, my smartphone, and would download it there the next time it accessed Google Play store.  Which it did.  I still can't get it onto the tablet because Google Play doesn't believe the tablet (which is how I was logged in when I downloaded it!) is associated with my account.

  • There's an additional problem with the "Sign Out that doesn't really sign you out".  If I "Sign Out" from Google, the next time I go to sign in, I get this:

Because I'm still actually logged in, depsite having explicitly told Google to LOG ME THE FUCK OUT, Firefox doesn't automatically enter my password for me.  I have no idea what my password is because I try to follow the "good password" practice of making them long and difficult to guess.  I let the password manager in Firefox handle that because . . . .  . that's what password managers are for.  So now I've got to muck around in Firefox and find the password so I can paste it in.

Yes, the password manager in Firefox is somewhat broken, but it works fine if a website actually logs you out when its supposed to.

  • Seriously? 2 seconds basic thinking and you find out how to log as another account: manage accounts -> sign in using a different account.

I think english speaking people have an expression for this behaviour: haters gonna hate.

Google wants to know all the information in the universe. That is their mission. It's not smart, or correct, but it's one of the things that makes them what they are.

Typically, the only way to disassociate a google account with an android device is with a "factory reset". Or if it is running a new enough version (4.3+ I think? it may have been there in 4.2 or even 4.1), you can have multiple users and just create a new account.

Of course they want to know that. How else can they ensure you never, ever get that resolution?

They also know when your browser doesn't support Flash, so they only serve up the Flash video player (especially if you explicitly asked for HTML5 video).

I wouldn't equate that phrase with the word culture, maybe more of a lack thereof...
