Had to use IE to contact Google's sales team

  • So I'm trying to contact Google's sales team in order to get a quote for the Maps API: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/business/?hl=en

Pressing "contact us" opens a form in which, when using Chrome, backspace is interpreted as "go back" even when inside a text field. I have no idea how they managed that. However, it's really hard to write something without using backspace; that instinct is apparently embedded on a subconscious level.

So I had to use IE, for a change. And now I'm really afraid every time I use a form.

  • I just tried completing the form in Chrome 31.0.1650.63 and backspace worked as intended in the text fields. However, pressing backspace on a drop down (why would you do that?) does take you back to the previous page.

  • There is one wonderful invention called Telephone. Try using that.

  •  I stopped trusting in-browser text editing a long time ago and write anything significantly lengthy in notepad then copy it over

I have 31.0.1650.63 m, so that's the exact same version (except the m, whatever that is). Win 8.1. I pressed backspace in a normal text field.

On my mac at home I've got Version 31.0.1650.63, without the m. Everything works without a hitch.

Clearly the m is for "not Mac."

The m stands for "multi", as in "we also installed Google Chrome Frame into Internet Explorer so it works instead of being a complete piece of shit depending on which version of IE you have."

I have version 32.0.1700.72 m which appears to be at least a week old. I can't belive you people are using such old out-dated software. And it works just fine on that form.

Speaking of that form . . . . half of it is drop-down lists and the rest is just first name, last name, email, phone number, company name and zip code. You can't type that without needing to use the backspace key?

I don't know about the OP, but I wasn't hired for my typing accuracy. Once, longer ago than I care to contemplate, I took a (required) typing class in school. (Yes, typing, as in manual typewriters.) Timed typing tests were scored by taking the raw number of words per minute (WPM) typed and subtracting one WPM for each error; on one memorable test I scored -2 WPM. Autocomplete usually allows me to type my own name into a web form (if I have filled out that form before) without having to backspace; otherwise, backspace is my friend.

Neither was I, but I can still do a pretty good job of typing my name, address and phone number without any mistakes.

I see an urgent need to defend my honor here. If you click next, they ask you more in detail what you would like to know. That's where I was hit. Which also means I filled in name, e-mail, company etc every time before the horror of backspace hit me.

  • lrn2lazarus. No, seriously. It's a lifesaver.

Huh! I took typing in high school back in the 70's. I always did better when frying on acid. Now, years of working on computers has my typing speed and accuracy up almost as good as when I was a zonked teenager.

I thought I'd made it clear but will try again. Backspace works fine for me in the text fields, so I can make as many fuck-ups typing my name as my heart desires.

But pressing backspace while focus is on a drop down (and I'll ask again why a sane person would do that?) does cause it to go all previous-page on my ass

Because apparently that's the default behavior.  You can see it right here on this page.  Have the focus nowhere, and hit backspace, and you go back one page.  Focus in a textbox?  Backspace does nothing.  Focus in a dropdown like the one at the top of the page?  Back one page.

So the default behavior is apparently backspace = history.go(-1); but that behavior is suppressed in a text field so that you get the normal text field behavior.  I assume it's always been this way but I don't have an ancient browser to test (I used the latest versions of Chrome and IE.)

  • Updated to Version 32.0.1700.76 m, problem is still there. Seems like there has to be a configuration issue on my side, somehow. Normally, backspace doesn't go back when a text field has focus, only on this page. Could it be because it is in a lightbox or something? So happy I'm not a front end developer..

I just tried that in 32.0.1700.76 beta-m and backspace in text fields did what you would expect, not act as history back, so it sounds like it's most likely on your end.
