Google continues to ram G+ into everything

  • G+ and GMail, now interconnected even more than before

    @Google said:

    No, not really.

    @Google said:

    If you are nodding your head 'yes' and already have a Google+ profile, then you’re in luck, because now it's easier for people using Gmail and Google+ to connect over email. As an extension of some earlier improvements that keep Gmail contacts automatically up to date using Google+, Gmail will suggest your Google+ connections as recipients when you are composing a new email.

    So I just circle thedailyWTF (or the White House, or whatever the fuck) and start emailing them? Or more importantly, anyone who has me circled (which I have no control over) can no start emailing me?

    Go home G+, you're drunk.

    My understanding is that yes someone could email you but they don't get to see what your email address is (unless you respond to them).  It probably will get you a little extra spam, but I kinda doubt that gmail addresses are used as spam accounts all that much (or at least the actual account isn't sending the emails, just put in as the sender which would keep the emails from hitting your account as google didn't generate it so can't do the plug in of the email address).

  • In addition to being completely stupid, something doesn't quite make sense. First it says:

    Gmail will suggest your Google+ connections as recipients when you are composing a new email.
    But then later, it says:
    You control whether people can reach you this way with a new setting in Gmail.

    So I can send an email to someone but they may or may not get it, depending on how they have configured this setting in GMail? Well, that's a nice feature. Email has apparently become too reliable and boring so we need to add some random excrement excitement.

    He'll probably not show up in the list, or you'll get an error message or so. Google is usually sensible enough. Then again, they are still trying to make Google+ happen...

  • So basically, since you could already send messages to other Google+ users, this is just a new interface for hangouts.

    Yes. Markhov did.

  • I look forward for the emails sent to wrong contacts caused by people out of habit only typing the first few letters of an address and not looking further.
    G+ contacts get listed last. At least that's done correctly.

    I can't find that setting, but it seems Goog's A/B-deployer hasn't select me yet for beta-testing the feature anyway. Or maybe it's because I don't have a G+ profile (that I know of).

    I read elsewhere that you only get the first email from the person until you respond. The linked post mentions "they'll only be only able start[sic] another conversation with you if you respond or add them to your circles". So there's that too.

    So essentially they are giving me another reason to not have a G+ profile. Unreliable email.

    Now, to be fair, this is the pessimistic view of what they are doing. But what are the odds of triggering this filtering? You'd have to:

    • be in their circles (not under your control);
    • not have their email address known by them (not under your control);
    • not have them in your circles (under your control);
    • want to get lots of emails from them without ever answering (under your control)

    The first three conditions imply a spammer, in which case you don't want to get messages from them. The last condition is trivial to solve.

    So I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt for now.

    Btw, I approve of your new avatar (I know that means a lot to you).

    Oh, man, how can I bootstrap a replacement?

    I was thinking about a replacement for search, for email there are plenty. I set my ownmail servers in a couple of VPSs, so except for the NSA part (but I won't host it at home), email gives me no problem.

    I've already stopped to think about how to make a small (low volume & low income & low cost) search engine. Up to now, I have no business case.

    Post your search queries to a forum, ask others to find the answer for you.

    The only issue is the latency.

    Very normal, actually. It's basically a fairly persistent polar hurricane. The cold winds usually stay up there. The problem this time is that instead of staying in the vortex, the winds came south.

    SSDS?

  • I'm reviving this thread because I can't find mine about YouTube automatically creating a G+ account for me. A while ago I successfully managed to delete my G+ account and unlink it from my YouTube account. At some point YouTube made a new G+ account for me (again), and now G+ is sending emails to my Yahoo! email, containing nonsense G+ posts from people I've never met before who live in another country! So I went to YouTube to delete my G+ again. However, now Google has it set up where you can only unlink G+ from YouTube if it was linked within the past 14 days. I can't do it because YouTube did it for me, without asking, sometime before 14 days ago.

    I don't need G+, I don't want G+, I don't use G+, I don't care about G+....seriously GTFO Google! G+ would be considered malware if any other company made it. It's the herpes of the social media world.

  • The one and only time I looked at my Google+ page it was nothing but complete crap that I have absolutely no interest in.  Even worse than that, at least 75% is political/social horseshit that I completely disagree with, and there is no obvious way to get rid of any of it.  So, I just ignore Google+, never look at it and pretend that it doesn't exist.

    I wish there was a better option, like dropping a nuke on Google headquarters, but ignoring them will have to do for now.

    Until something you do on your Gmail account "violates" some mysterious TOS on G+, and your G+ account gets locked, which also irrevocably deletes your Gmail account.

    This reminds me of a thought I had:

    If I'm not invested in the technology, like, not at all, I just use it as an single-purpose appliance, then is it strange that I do not remember all these brand/company/software names?

    Here's a list of objects in my house which' brand and model names I don't remember: coffee maker, oven, washing machine, dryer, fridge, boiler, water cooker, pots & pans, where I bought my lamp stands or what brand they are, light bulbs, etc etc.

    I use all that tech often, but I'm not mentally invested in it.

    Tech I als use often, and am invested in: my Denon PMA amplifier, Sennheiser HD555,  Dell monitor, Asus motherboard (of which I can almost remember the serial), Club3D/AMD 7850 video card, Seagate and Hitachi and Wester Digital Green hard drives, Windows 8, etc etc you get the point.

    I don't remember the brand of my RAM, which goes to support my point because RAM is not interesting tech to me.

    I would totally forget the brand and model of my car if I had one (and could drive it).

    Probably an electric kettle in English. More commonly owned by tea drinkers, I'd say, and not terribly common in America, where we tend to have coffee makers in more abundance.

  •  I actually quit tea a while ago. I drink mostly tap water.
