200% improvement in user experience while crashing

  • I like "Directory listing is now more accurate".

    Not even "Directory listing works now", but simply that it's less inaccurate than it was before.

    What even is an inaccurate directory listing? Missing files? Spurious fictional files? Incorrect dates?

    I've written a few directory enumerators in my time but you've given me an awesome idea. I'm going to start putting the following in;

    foreach(File file in files)
    {
      buffer.AppendLine(file.ToString());

      if (rnd(1) > 0.98)
      {
        buffer.AppendLine("SexWithPandas.wmv 483,836,932 Bytes");
      }
    }

  • Randomise the filename using a Markov chain generator, so that no two people ever get the same filename, then no-one can search the web for the spurious name that comes up, nor will it appear in a search of the source code.

    Isn't that Google's algorithm for generating search results?

  • I also thought the line "No longer (as) optional" was interesting.

    What does it mean for something to be less optional? Taken together with the line below, "No longer (as) buggy", it would seem that there's some correlation between optionality and bugginess. Perhaps once the program no longer accepts user input, all the bugs will disappear. But then, that would be a waste of all the user experience improvements when crashing.

  • That is not a WTF. If you're going to crash, at least do so gracefully and try to return me to the same place I left off before I crashed. If an application just blows up and dies, then restarts cold, there is plenty of room for improvement. TRWTF is that they placed "user experience while crashing improved" under "fixed at least 10 crashes". Those two statements are siblings, not parent/child. If those crashes were fixed, the user experience during crashing would be irrelevant because it wouldn't crash in those ten situations.

    All you'd really have to do is use a solid background instead of the translucent green background or the snow gif background image that I've used already. But there are at least two good reasons why adapting my code probably isn't going to work for you...

  • Considered Harmful

    The border grows when I zoom in with my phone, so if you get close enough for the text to be legible, the viewable area between borders shrinks away to nothing. I figured out that it doesn't resize the overlay until you release the pinch gesture, so I was able to read outside the edges.
