We should number the firefox-threads or sth.

So you guys all remember the bar in firefox that popped out whenever a site had content that required a plugin to play? The one that extended downwards, so it's really easy to hijack/fake with javascript in order to infect people with viruses?

Well, thanks to codec-packs and my insistence to install every piece of external software before even opening a browser on a new machine, I haven't seen one of those in years (except for scammers, of course). Well, turns out in the new Firefox-Beta the bar makes a startling new return...

... to  inform me that flash-content is on the site. That is right, the bar is displayed, ON EVERY FRIGGIN' SITE THAT HAS FLASH or other plugins. Please note that clicking block does nothing, since flash content is already blocked per default, you idiots, why is this even a button? Why yes, let's include a "change nothing" button. Ace UI-Design you guys. Oh and clicking "allow" just takes me to a different sub-menu on top of the address bar, where I have to INPUT MY DECISION AGAIN. What? This Redesign (and who the fuck does even do a redesign in Beta 7? Have you guys heard about something called a feature window?) is so stupid, I'm not even mad at all the scammers that will soon use this to trick me into installing BetterSurf. Take it, scammers, you clearly want control over this browser more than I do.

  •  Since our thread on Firefox Australis http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/t/30182.aspx

I have gone over to SeaMonkey http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ which is Firefox but wth the old UI. All my plugins work (AdBlock, Session Manager etc).

Bye bye, Firefox - you've been dumped. No, we can't"just be friends".

  • Can't use Chrome easily on this site, can't use Chrome with SSRS 2008 R2 (why?). Firefox is just horrible.

egads! I may have to resort to Internet Explorer!

  • I'm really worried when Australis lands on release builds due to all this odd negative feedback, but then I was also worried about windows 8, which turned out to be something of a dud.

If only a single person who worked for Mozilla felt the same way. =(

Only because everyone I know of just installs an alternative start menu and completely disables the Modern UI afaik. Is that possible in Firefox?

Meh, even if it's not. It open source so we can just fork it!

The current defualt UI of Firefox sucks shit, but with a theme and a few tweaks I can get it where I like it. From what I saw during my brief tryout of the new "Australis" design, an enormous amount of that configurablitily has been removed. They haven't just changed the UI, they've actually gone to great effort to make sure you can't change it back to the way you like it. @dtech said:

Right. Ever wonder why the Interwebs is full of people complaining about Firefox but there is no fork that actually fixes/undoes all the things that Mozilla has done wrong?

Emphasized that for you-- and thus highlighted the ENTIRE problem. People should be able to tweak and configure to get to/create a UI experience like Aurorisalisizeism-- not to have to undo it.

A user should not have to spend copious amounts of effort just to restore the standard and expected UI.

    Not me.

I was wondering if there's a way to turn off the start button in 8.1

Is as slow to start as FX, or even slower?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Actually the button is nicer than having to click on blank space.

Everyone that's whining about the start screen isn't giving it a fair shake. MS crippled Start Menu in Vista by removing the flyout feature, even though the latter was a mess. Start screen lets you sort your icons your own way, which the menu stopped letting you do after XP, and offers you much larger click targets than a one-line-by-20-character or so one.

One of the reasons I have been a happy Maxthon user for years. Chrome by default (but with a UI that works better for me), and if some weird website breaks, you can render the same page in IE with the click of a button. Or, as is more often the case for me: when testing a website, figure out what breaks in IE without having to actually start up IE.

I just realized I've been reading this as SSDS all day, for which "why?" (with a few expletives added) is the only reasonable question.
