New YouTube Comments: Part Deux

  • In Episode One YouTube made Google+ part of the comment system. Now we bring you Episode Two: Revenge of the Jedi.

YouTube started to require that its users log in to Google+, allegedly to help fix the cesspool that was the YouTube comments section.

But along with those changes, Google also thought it would be safe to turn off certain comment restrictions. Previously, YouTube comments had a character limit and couldn’t contain hyperlinks in order to prevent some of the worst spam. Now those restrictions are off, leading to people posting links to porn or screamer videos, or just dropping ASCII porn art below videos.

To compound the problem (just as we predicted at the time of the change rollout), Google greatly underestimated the ability of YouTube commenters to produce what qualifies as “engaged conversation” while managing to be also disgusting, offensive, NSFW, irrelevant, or all of the above.

YouTube commenters are exceedingly good at either bickering or piling on to each other to produce a long comment thread. Because of the lack of content moderation, the relaxed restrictions, and the fact that there are enough people who do not care if their offensive comment is attached to their real name, not only are those long and terrible comment threads still there, but they are now often featured prominently as the video’s meatiest discussion. For certain values of “meatiest,” that is not entirely inaccurate.

They should just disable comments and be done with it. Seriously, nothing good in the entire history of the Internet has come from content generated by a website's users.

  • This includes, of course, this very website.

Which would include the text of your comment? ;-)

OMG I DID NOT EVEN REALIZE THAT WAS THE JOKE WHEN I POSTED THAT JOKE!

  • Here, use this:

I was actually looking for the Zoidberg going, "THAT was the joke!" but I found this one instead and it's funnier.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

The worst part is that the G+ integration killed the Herp Derp plugin.

This was supposed to be a reply to Lorne Kates' comment about disabling comments but Community Disserver was just refreshing the page when I hit the quote button.

RIP Herp Derp. The good news is that the new YouTube comments layout is so godawfully fucked and so massively dependent on a shittonne of javascript, most of which is server and reserved from plus.google.com-- that it just straight up doesn't work.  It may be some forgotten AdBlock rule that is stripping them out. It may be that their javascript is SO fragile, that a single missing script prevents the entire thing from rendering in the first place.  (Sidenote: THAT is why rendering 100% with Javascript is stupid. One of the reasons one. One of the may reasons).

The end result is the same. I don't get assaulted with YouTube comments, so hurray for Google incompetence?

I can't post comments now that you have to sign in, anyway.

Oddly, the forum can't handle the Quote button when you're using IE11:  I had to use the Developer Tools and change the document mode from Edge to 10 to get it to work.

    Pretty simple function.

What's in the console? I can only presume is's a security problem or some method got deprecated in  11.

I have found that if you activate the Feather beta at http://www.youtube.com/testtube, you not only get improved page loading times but you also get no YouTube comments, by design! :D

    Seems alright.

I don't get why they had to make it uglier than the regular  pages. It's not like the regular style is very graphics- and css-heavy.

Looks like some variable named rng loses the object, becoming null, and then scripting calls a method named deleteContents() on it.

null is null or not an object.
