Did I miss the thread about the new Firefox redesign?

  • If so, feel free to insult me.

If not, take a look at this

I have at this point given up on complaining about Android-Style Icons. However they arent't planning on an option of turning this off (like I did with their ridicolous start menu clone), so I'm having a hard time not to rage at this.

Why do you complain? Not only are those changes proposed by UX specialists, they also confirm that "many plugins, add-ons, and skins will remain compatible with Australis". Of course when we get closer to the release, "many" will probably become "some" and "will" will become "may", but that's a small price to pay to have a cupcake on the menu bar (I hope it's included).

Improved? WTF? Over the past couple of years they have repeatedly removed customization features. The Mozilla Doublespeak is really getting thick. "Worse is better!! Less is more!! We're improving customization capabilities by removing customization capabilities". @fire2k said:

Well, I suppose it was inevitable. After a couple of years slowly ruining Firefox a little at a time I guess it's time for a bold move that completely destroys it in one fell swoop.@Ronald said:

Okay, so knowing that you just wanted to make a cupcake joke, I'll still try a blakeyrant.

Oh, hey, it's... icons, I guess. No form of text or explanation what any of these mean, but hey. And that inactive tab is melting with the background, because borders and clear distinctions are really bad?

I dare you guess what these icons mean. I was dead set on the left one being the menu, but as you can see in the second screenshot, the menu is on the far right, because fuck consistency. The second one kind of looks like a mix between the google currents logo and a OS X loading icon, so I'm going with social media. It's almost like that one time they enabled Facebook directly into the browser as a default-installed extension type. And a cupcake. Yay. Oh, and they stole the Omni-Bar from Chrome. Had to happen eventually Mozilla, but try not to show your inferiorety complex as much. Also if you fuck with my instant-button for Wikipedia I will hurt somebody. You know what I expected on the left where it says Firefox? A freaking certificate/connection info. Is this a site that uses SSL? Does it have valid domain scripting? Who knows.

Oh hey, it's the actual menu, on the left. And they have reduced the Edit-Options to Copy, Cut and Paste. Congratulations for having less text editing options than Android. What if I want to select all, delete, redo or undo text edits without shortcuts? And why the f*** are there now buttons for zooming with icons? 3 scenarios: I have only a mouse, in which case I'll probably zoom so infrequently this shoudn't be a easily accessable button. I have Mouse + Keyboard, where all of this already has had both shortcuts and options elsewhere. I have a touchscreen, and who the f**** zooms via buttons on a touchscreen? Oh, and I just love the icons Mozilla thinks are frequent features. Sure, I print websites every five minutes. Sure I need a quick-select for the developer console. How about a open stuff icon? How do I open tabs? Oh wait, you have to add those

Oh and here is how it looks on a window manager almost as fucked as this redesign:

Has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I give it an 83.

And the 2013 Ironic Lack Of Self Awareness Award goes to:

  • @fire2k said:

In fairness, it probably says “Firefox” because the displayed page is a Firefox-internal page and not a Web page. You probably get the usual security info when navigating to a real Web page.

Also, I’d guess that the icons on the left are some pinned tabs... Well, I hope so. (Couldn’t they use websites that people KNOW ABOUT for their screenshots?)

Still, the current fad of putting the whole menu bar in a single button on the right side of the window is becoming annoying. The Gnome PDF viewer does it now. Guess which button gets hidden when the window is too small (read: is at its default size)?

I get the impression "Atlantis" is some sort of fork, and isn't part of the trunk; i.e. you have to actively 'opt-in' to get anywhere near it. I certainly haven't seen any of this crap creeping up in anything up to FF28.

Only one thing left to do. We need to fork firefox and redesign the UI and privacy features. It will be rewritten to use Qt because fuck Gnome and integrate with KDE because fuck Gnome and it will feature full privacy protection like fully screening cookies from one domain from other domains, breaking all kinds of web standards, which fortunately only advertisers care about because fuck Gnome... I mean Google. Fuck Google. Also fuck Gnome.

  • Many organizations hire when An Important Task has to be Accomplished. Once that task has been accomplished, the people hired are still around. They feel important (hey, they've Accomplished The Imporant Task), so now feel like they have to do something else. So they start inventing new measures, reorganizations, laws, whatever the organization's meta-process likes. That usually ends up with hiring more people.

Mozilla has volunteers. These are usually worse than normal employees, because they don't get hired by qualification, and you can't fire them. And ... they're not driven by money, but by feeling that they make an important contribution to society. But that feeling is not served by moving an icon by one or two pixels. Nope. It has to be Something Important, something that befits their feeling of grandeur. So another redesign is born. And since they know what's best for you, it won't be optional.

Mozilla needs a dictator. And a damn good one too.

Although Mozilla does have volunteers, they also have employees. More than 500, according to their LinkedIn page. And since they get $300 Million a year in free money from Google, they don't have to worry about creating a product that people actually want.

What is the problem with Divx btw? Their software nowadays produces pretty okay H264-Encodings that work almost everywhere I try them where H264 is supported. Their Encoder has some of the best Image-Filters on the market, and since you can just let other software use that it doesn't even matter that they can't design user interfaces.

Well didn't take as long as I thought to build. And it doesn't play nicely with them; they are usable, but only just. Clicking a parent will randomly (it seems) actually select that tab, and also randomly (it seems) open/close the children.

And my muscle-memory search short-cut is now broken - ctrl-K no longer works; they've (as far as I can discern, permanently) removed the search box, and ctrl-k does bugger all[1]. Customise certainly doesn't present a search box for you to play with, and the Awsome bar prompts to 'Search or enter address,' though I'm sure it's done that for a while.

[1] Actually, upon further investigation, it is 'working' - ctrl-k moves focus to an invisible control which acts as the old search box which does actually search; you simply can't see what you're typing unless the suggestions window pops up. An oversight I'm sure that will be 'fixed' in an upcoming check-in.

Hah! I was wrong - it's not the searchbox; it's another (normally invisible) awesome bar - visible briefly if you invoke any of the old (normally invisible) menu items which briefly become visible. Anything not darkened in this image is normally invisible. 'asdf' was the search I was trying for after hitting ctrl-k:

It produces one, but it's a FireFox cupcake, so:

    1) They've removed the icing

    2) It's sugar free, unless you modify the recipe book before clicking the button

    3) When it arrives, it's jammed whole straight down your throat because their survey of 1 user from AutoeroticAsphyxiation.Com showed that 100% of Firefox users say that chewing prevents them from spending more time with Grumpy Cat.

    4) It'll be gone next release, and you'll have to add on your own fucking cupcakes.

  • Fired up the new Asstralis. Might as well give it a try. And it's every bit as bad as I feared. Actually worse. The one thing that continues to make Firefox tolerable in the face of all the UI mangling has been the ability to do extensive customizing. But they are hard at work fixing that. An enormous amount of customizability has been removed.

Tabs On Top -- No thanks, I want my tabs below the URL bar, where God intended them to be. Well, Firefox says Fuck You, you're getting Tabs On Top whether you like it or not. Just removing the menu item and burying the setting in about:config isn't enough. Even if you go into about:config and change the setting, it does nothing.

There are only 2 toolbars - Menu bar and Bookmarks toolbar. No more Add-On Bar, which means the Status Bar Extension doesn't work because THERE'S NO FUCKING PLACE TO PUT IT. . SEROUSLY?? WTF!! Firefox says: You want a Status Bar? Fuck You.

The Back and Forward buttons are now welded to the URL Bar, so you can't just arrange your buttons any way you like. This layout is no longer possible:

The History Button can only go to the far left, before the Back button or to the far right of the URL Bar. The Reload Button has been replaced with a swirly arrow that is welded to the far right side of the URL Bar and can't be moved and the Stop Button is gone completely. Want text labels with your buttons? Fuck you.

There's a lot more, but fuck it, I give up. If I want a browser with a shitty UI that can't be changed I'll use Internet Explorer or Chrome.

Just as I thought would happen -- Firefox has joined the growing list of applications that can never be updated because the new version sucks shit.

Yes, that one. It was such fun to drop into Circuit City and have the salesthing try to tell you the advantages of paying $4 for a disc, taking it home, finding a place to store it, and you could watch it as many times as you wanted for 48 hours after which it would no longer play unless you paid an additional fee either to extend the viewing period of a disc that you supposedly already "bought". And all those discs that you paid the upgrade fee to "DIVX Gold" which later became worthless when the dial-up service that checked whether you were allowed to play them went away.

I see that in January the same fate will finally befall all of those old WebTV receivers. At which point those of us who wanted to play Uru interactively will shed a sympathetic tear.

(For the person who tried to add Mt St Helens to the list of failures, no go. All the others resulted from bad decisions; Mt St Helens was a mountain that blew up due to nobody's fault.)
