Bedbug Registry has some bugs

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

    Bedbugs bite. IT'S A PUN!

I don't travel a lot, but when I do, I make sure to look into where I'm staying. Are the reviews ok? Is it next to a crack house (... I'll let you decide if that is a positive or a negative). And most importantly, have there been any reports about bed bugs.

I was told, hey, rather than looking at hotel reviews to see if anyone mentions bed bugs, why not look at the Bed Bug Registry?

And my answer has always been because this site never fucking works. I don't mean that it doesn't have the information. I mean that the search literally never works.

I've tried disabling adblock and noscript. I've tried IE and Chrome. I've tried multiple different computers. But each and every time I enter a search, I just get back a white screen with an URL to a local.yahooapis.com query.

There HAS to be something I'm doing wrong. This is supposed to be a major website, but it's been broken every time I've tried to use it for well over a year. That-- that just can't be. I refuse to believe that such a fundamental flaw exists untouched for that long.

Example, I'm attending SFContario. I'm thinking of staying overnight, but it's in a sketchy hotel in a sketchy part of Toronto. There is a hamburger chain across the street called Harvey's. It has sufficient clientele of a particular type to be known (by employees even) as Whorevey's. I'm sure there's plenty of interesting things I could catch from that area, all of which are avoidable (insert condom jokes here)-- but the one I'm most worried about is bed bugs. Let's ask the registry.

Plug in "Ramada Plaza Hotel", and "Toronto, ON", click Search and...

    Search result URL: http://www.bedbugregistry.com/search/n:Ramada-Plaza-Toronto-Hotel/l:Toronto-ON/

What I assume is supposed to be a server-side lookup and not shit given to me, the end user: http://local.yahooapis.com/LocalSearchService/V3/localSearch?appid=3ioax_3V34E5zqFKxE7k2gCV6U5T1L_V3vofkMoeIRePJJePr5XPvEHZ7mQESGozZ0KD&query=hotel+Ramada+Plaza+Toronto+Hotel&location=Toronto+ON&results=20

So, seriously, wtf guys? Is this supposedly useful site as fucked as it seems to be? Otherwise please tell me how I'm TRWTF, because I'm at a serious loss. :|

    Just No :-)

Searching for "Ramada Plaza Hotel" in "Toronto, ON" gives http://www.bedbugregistry.com/search/n:Ramada-Plaza-Hotel/l:Toronto-ON/ and a search result list (at least here), admittedly without any hotel in Toronto. For the provided link you have to search for "Ramada Plaza Toronto Hotel" in "Toronto, ON", which gives the shown error, but who does that?

Considering it took only 1 min to figure out i assume you already knew that and just wanted to rage a bit about a TDWTFy website, but despite having a metric fuckton of WTFs this error only occurs in case of an empty search result.

OK, I gave it a try in Firefox and IE. I did not experience your problem, however, the site is broken in other wonderful ways. Searching for "Ramada Plaza Hotel", and "Toronto, ON" returns 17 results. There are 17 Ramada Plaza Hotels in Toronto? But wait, it gets better, and of course by better I mean worse. Although the search "works" the results are useless if you are searching for a hotel in Canada.

If you read what I wrote-- I put in search terms. I click search. The resulting page is the URL I posted. If it's the wrong URL, then I shouldn't get it. But I do.

And if it's because you put in "Ramada Plaza Hotel" and I somehow put in something different, shouldn't my result screen be "Sorry, no fucking results found" rather than whateverthefuckitis that I got?

  • If you read what i wrote---

i already said that the website has a lot of errors and i did not try to defend a broken "no search result"-page.

All my intentions were to point at the inconsistency in your post, where the provoded search terms and search URL didn't match.

If somehow bed bug registry changed your search terms magically thats another WTF but then its behaving different on your side than on mine...

In other news i'm signing out to get the OMGWTF2-parcel from the post station :-D Yay!

Did you win the autographed picture of Alex's junk?

    ...

I'm just kidding. He gives those to everyone.

Everyone is trying to emulate Google these days. For example, recently I was trying to find a video. I tried Youtube, I tried Google, but no luck. No matter how I tried to refine my search and make it as exact as possible, all I got was crap that wasn't even close to what I was looking for. Now, the particular video I was looking for is fairly old and obscure so its entirely possible that it doesn't exist on the Internet. OK, fine. I've got no problem with that. But if that's the case, then my search should return no results, not thousands of wrong results.

Are you talking about that old FBI surveillance footage that shows MLK beating a poodle to death with a broken lamp? I think it's sealed until 2027.

    No, I have that one.

Goddamit, I'm so fucking sick of this urban legend spreading harmful misconceptions. Especially this one which I've seen repeated over and over.

It wasn't a broken lamp! I know the rightwingers love that little fact because it makes MLK look like some ghetto nigger who can't afford proper light fixtures. The lamp was in perfect working order when he started beating the poodle, and was of high enough quality to survive the entire bludgeoning.

Two facts always end up muddying the water. First, the light bulb broke. That's an established fact, but lightsbulbs are light bulbs. They're fagile, like poodle spines. Second, the lamp cord was intentionally torn out of the base by MLK. People assume this means the cord started off snapped, but that's not true. It was an intentional and calculated decision to tear out the cord: the poodle was still alive and was crawling away on it's remaining paw. It would have crawled out of striking distance of the lamp, so MLK was completely correct and justified in "breaking" the lamp's cord to chase down the poodle and crush the remainder of it's bones. Do you think MLK was the sort of person to leave a job half finished? If he hadn't done that, that's what the urban legend would be all about-- that he was lazy and didn't finish what he started.

  • Wow, seriously? Dropping the N-bomb? As you sat there typing that belabored attempt at humor, you made a conscious decision to use that?

If you look at the video closely and enhance the pixels (which is totally a real thing that you can do) you'll see that it looks suspiciously like a sheep with a chromosomal defect. Is it simply an unclear video and am I reading too much into these "crackpot theories", or is it in fact evidence of a top-secret military ovine enhancement program gone horribly, horribly awry? Well I say the government says it's a poodle because that's what Big Oil wants you to think.

I'm just saying. Everybody knows black people can use that word. I just thought it funny as a possibility and I'll bet Frosh never thought of that. It's a nice juxtaposition of political correctness and political incorrectness, and a humorous twist on a negative post. I thought it was a good joke!

FWIW, I'm not offended by the N-word so I genuinely don't give a shit what color Lorne is, but I assume he's white. Mainly because of his name.

I'm grey. My avatar is an actual photo. I was the model for the CS "Default" image.

Fun fact: it was a nude photo shoot.

If you were nude, then whose hand is that? That must have been one cosy shoot. BTW, you pull off that bland salt-and-pepper look very well IMO.

Then what's that arm thing hanging off your face?
