In their defence, apparently the japanese seriously value this kind of stuff.

I'm waiting for the short where she goes off to hunt witches in strangely designed psycho-worlds.

Inori is, we are told, "an anime personification for Internet Explorer."
So she was mercilessly and perpetually raped by Russians and Nigerians for the first 18 years of her life. She's the broken girl who will desperately cling to you, and you'll still use her when nothing else better is around. She's kinda the default choice.
She isn't allowed in Europe without an escort. I think they're afraid of the diseases she'll spread if left unchecked.
And these days, the only ones who use her regularly are middle-aged corporate business men. And even then, they still prefer her younger self-- one might say her underaged self. Y'know the 12 year old one.

As for the style of the clip; mixing the 'magical girl' genre with aspects typical of shounen (boys) anime has been a thing for some time now: e.g. Nanoha, Precure, Symphogear.
I'm actually a bit surprised here though; the artwork is really good for what is really just a commercial message. Obviously Microsoft has money left to burn...Also; it's not like Microsoft hasn't done this before.

Wait, haven't we bashed this one already? Anyway, I like that quote:
"Most of what Inori does, however, seems to involve less HTML rendering and more jumping around and shooting lasers from her hands."
If only IE was more like that...

Filed under: i imagine FF would be shooting the kind of lasers that you can see coming and evade
I like how those lasers are concentrated light (EM waves), travelling fast enough for you to see, but slow enough for you to evade.
It's got to take more superior technology to produce those than the lasers you can't evade.

Ads like this send the message: "Look how successful we are, we can spend millions of dollars of our customer's money on this crap and stay in business. The obvious choice is to use our product since there is no way we could be doing this well if our product wasn't used by everyone." The same logic applies to any company that puts their logo on the broadcast of a sporting event (or the event itself like the former Winston Cup). The more stupid and pointless (and expensive) the ad is, the better it makes the point. BTW, these types of ads are very effective.
-
That's not really how these ads work.

Clearly they should hire a washed-out American star to promote the product in Japan: for relaxing times, make it Internet Explorer time.
-
And don't forget your Inori desktop wallpaper so you can really creep people out at work.

I think that's called conspicuous consumption. It's apparently effective enough to be viable as an evolutionary mechanism.

List of Microsoft's official OS-tans:
- Windows 7: Madobe Nanami (madobe = window, nana = seven)
- Windows 8: Madobe Yuu & Madobe Ai (yuuai = friendship)
- Silverlight: Aizawa Hikaru (hikaru = light)
- Azure: Madobe Claudia
Nanami and Inori even seem to have Facebook pages, with at least Inori's being official one (internetexplorertan.com redirects to it and it's registered to Microsoft). Oh, and try to go to http://www.internetexplorertan.com/home/ with non-IE (older IE versions may also work)

Spending a ton of effort to create something that's even more useless than the original? Seems oddly familiar.

Oh wow. This is a special kind of creep-weird.

"Inori" btw means "prayer". Unlike a lot of japanese words, this one has exactly one meaning. They really are getting desperate.

Ironically, the more mature one is less than a year old.
