New YouTube comments

  • And so it started.

Now when I sign in to Gmail, if I then access YouTube I am signed in with my email address. They no longer show me the prompt of which name I'd rather be known as (I'd rather not by signed in at all, for the record).

I can still get the prompt if I sign in to YouTube first though. What difference that actually makes other than have a different name on the top right corner of the screen is however still a mystery.

And of course, I now have the new "improved" comments, by default ordered by whatever passes as importance in their implementation. These now include Google Plus comments.

While the G+ comments are clearly identified as such, Google seemed however to have not considered that YT is not G+, and that YT comments are a different beast from G+ posts. So what's happening is that people use G+ as what it is, a sharing site, and say stuff like "check out this nice video I've found!" and other people +1 their posts and these wind up on YT. And just like that the top comments on videos are not comments pertinent to the video itself, but people giving vague descriptions of what the video is about, or saying they were watching it while washing their cat.

Also, they say they favour comments by people I know on G+. That's a good idea, really, but since I don't use G+ I'm guessing I'm going to get comments from complete strangers (no difference there) who happen to be popular on G+ (that's different). I hope they consider I'm more interested in seeing comments actually relevant to the videos and not inside jokes made by such or such internet celebrity.

Oh well, at least they're not messing with anything important on this one.

And to be fair I should give them a few days to see if they get their shit together.

  • Is it somehow related to this announcement last month

Those changes are supposed to go "live" the 11th, whatever that means.

  • Use Firefox "New Private Window" and you won't be logged in. You could also try Firefox' extension "Cookie Controller" to see if some junk is stored locally to link the accounts.

  • Oh, this is just precious. Jawed Karim, co-founder of YouTube, makes his first comment after 8 years:

@TGV: I've been using incognito modefor some time now.

Well you shouldn't have sold out to Google if you didn't want it to come to this!

    It's always been like that.

3 years ago I made a bunch of short videos that I posted to Youtube. Someone on another forum I used to frequent decided to be a prick and made bogus copyright infringement claims and a couple of videos were removed. I complained to YT but got no response. I complained some more and they suspended by account. OK, no big deal, it's just fucking Youtube. In the future I won't waste my time making videos that can be taken down by any random asshat.

But then I discovered the problem - When they suspended the YT account they also suspened the Gmail account associated with it. Get kicked off YT and lose your email too. How nice. After jumping through a few hoops I was able to get the Gmail acount back, but there was still another problem. If I was logged into Gmail and then tried to got to Youtube I would get an error message (You are evil, you cannot access this Google product, blah, blah, blah, blah). Even if I just wanted to watch a video the only way I could access YT was to sign out of Gmail first.

But now they seem to have changed that slightly. After they suspended my original YT/Gmail accounts, I created a new one. Now, if I am logged into Gmail (the newer account) and I go to YT I am also logged in there. But if I am logged into the older Gmail account and then go to YT, I'm not logged in. So, in the course of all their constant pointless tinkering and changing things that don't need to be changed, they accidentally did something that helped me. Go figure.

Who reads YT comments, anyway? It's an even more wretched hive of scum and villainy than this site. Now, instead of retards arguing whether $band is shit or not, you have useless comments from people who can't set their privacy options straight, which, to me, is actually an improvement.

  • I've just deleted my G+ account. That also meant removal of my YouTube channel. I had one opera karoake video (Mozart's Der Hölle Rache) which was relatively popular (some 4k views per month), and a few more in that style, but the amateur opera divas of this world now have to turn their attention elsewhere.

If Google wants to have content and people that watch their effing ads, they should stop leeching from us than strictly necessary.

The problem is most people view Search, Gmail, Youtube and Google+ as separate things, but Google wants everything to be one big single entity. And that is demonstrated by their new log-in page:

This is the new Google Way -- all or nothing.

  • Nothing it is, then.

Took me a little while to get used to fastmail.fm's webmail, but now that I have, it's so much nicer to use than the current version of Gmail. It's about as good as Gmail was before the bleeding-on-a-dirty-gym-sock makeover, and $100 gets you three years of it with no ads. Recommended.

$100 and adblock gets you 3 years of Gmail or Outlook.com or Yahoo Mail with no ads, plus you get to keep the $100.

$100 gets you 2 years of Office365, including: 50GB mailbox, 25GB SkyDrive, SharePoint, a website, office web apps, and you can use your own domain name. And I'm pretty sure that whatever you get on Google Apps for $100 is also quite better than fastmail.fm.

Your recommendation stinks of cognitive dissonnance, like people who deep down know that their iPhone is an overpriced piece of shit or that the big position they bought in Twitter stock on IPO day was a mistake, but they promote Apple or Twitter so they can convince themselves and other that they did a good move.

For those who don't know or don't want to waste time googling it: fastmail.fm is a fucking joke, you have to pay $5 a year to get a 100MB (yes: MB) inbox, or $20 for a 1GB inbox. And you get nothing more than what you have with any basic free email provider, except the possibility to use your own domain and that's only if you take one of the $40+ annual plans. That's basically like someone who goes and buy Winzip because it's "better" than 7-zip. Idiot.

It shows my email address instead of my YT name, is what I'm saying. I don't know if this has any actual implications though.

But that's the problem, right? With Google you never know the implications.

The new log-in page that by default leaves your name and address on the computer, unless you click to sign in as a different user and check off "Stay signed in" before signing in and out again.

But, if you don't read YT comments you'll be missing on stuff like this.

Edit: decided it's probably best to not copy that crap over here.
