    Thanks a lot.

  • That is entirely possible with a no-longer-existing piece of third party software.

    Am I serious?

Normally that would not be an unreasonable request. Any forum software, even something no longer produced, should have configuration options that allow you do deal with unwanted posts. Unfortunately, this is Community Server we're talking about. The fact that admins/mods can't even delete posts, just move them to some other hidden location, pretty much says it all.

A trash bin is normal for every popular forum software I've seen.

But do we really need to keep, at the time of posting, 2376 deleted posts?

A trash bin that can't be emptied.  What a brilliant invention.

Seems like someone could write a trigger or something in the DB. I have no idea what the schema looks like, but I understand that it runs on SQL Server, which I'm told is a first class RDBMS. Fuck, I mean, Excel could do this ages ago.

    I like to reminisce.

That's the problem with Community Server. The version of CS running here is from around  2005-2007, I believe. Looking at the Telligent website it appears that the last major release of CS was in 2007. So, even though it might be 7 or 8 years old, that's still new enough to have some decent features and functions. Instead, it has all the function and quality of a 6th grade school project from 1993.

    I like it.

We should make an exact replica of community server but add spam filtering and call it a day.

No XSS prevention stuff. That's for wusses.

Just a run of the mill spam post. The fact that my GM script leaves the 'delete child post' box checked implies Lorne didnt actually reply to the post in question.

It's not going to happen, no matter how nice you think it is.

    And another thing ...

"purchase high quality" might be a nice string to search for, too.

You still don't get it, do you.

    • The software used to run these forums is crap.(and that's a huge understatement)
    • It was discontinued at least 4 years ago, which means no updates or improvements.
    • I have no idea what capabilities the software has for dealing with spam, but based on what I do know about the software I would say that it's pretty close to nothing.
    • The people in charge here are also active participants.  If there was a way to automatically block/delete the spam I'm pretty sure they would do it.
    • Did I mention that the software is crap?
    • No amount of complaining will change any of this
    • It's annoying, but that's the way it is.

None of the back-end stuff I have access to has much to do with pro-actively dealing with spam, except perhaps requiring new members to be approved - and the last time that was tried it failed abysmally as a spam-control measure in that too many false positives were reported IIRC.
