More forum WTFness

  • If you click “Mark all as read,” the forum duly marks the forum as read and shows you all threads as gray.

However, as soon as any thread is posted to, every thread you haven’t visited is marked as having news replies again!

    Ie the situation starts something something like this;

    • [new] A thread about foo
    • [new] Bar baz WTF?
    • [new] Whatever blah blah
    • [new] Something else entirely

After I click on “Bar baz WTF?” and read that thread it looks like so:

    • [new] A thread about foo
    • Bar baz WTF?
    • [new] Whatever blah blah
    • [new] Something else entirely

Now I click “Mark all as read.”

    • A thread about foo
    • Bar baz WTF?
    • Whatever blah blah
    • Something else entirely

And then someone posts to “Whatever blah blah:”

    • [new] Whatever blah blah
    • [new] A thread about foo
    • Bar baz WTF?
    • [new] Something else entirely

Now “A thread about foo” and “Something else entirely” are both marked new again even though they have no new replies! I have to actually open these threads to make the forum stop telling me they have new replies whenever some other thread is posted to.

    WTF?

  • Of course, this also means that because there are approximately 1,500 old threads in the forum archives, I always have to click “Mark all as read,” even if all the threads I can see on the first page are grey. Because when I flip to page 2 ff. of the forum, all the old threads I never visited are marked as having new replies.

  • Sort threads by posted date, not by the reply date.  That way,
they'll show in the order Alex originally posted, and you won't have to
worry about older threads you've marked read popping up.

Also, make sure that you have the forum remember your preferences, otherwise it's lost at the end of session.

  • What if I have no interest in the way you read the forum and just want normal forum operation to operate as normal forums do?
