Link WTF
-
Imagine, you have a web site. Onto that web site, you want to put a link to somebody else's site. You know its URL, so you put that URL directly onto your page. You'd think the simplest thing to do then would be make it link directly to that same URL. Or maybe not.
-
Would you put a direct link to a polish domain on your website? That's like calling a phone sex service using your wife's iPhone. You don't want to taint the logs.
-
Works even better if you munge it a bit first

If I had a nickel for everytime I've seen this on a major news agency's website, I'd be able to afford my own staff to write these posts for me.
Google used to have a dirty trick that would replace a search-result link with a redirect when you right-clicked, just so it would still show the real link in the address bar but give the redirect when copied. It wouldn't surprise me if Facebook's redirect worked the same way. I assume it's done so they can continue to track (and sell) analytics of clicks on those links when they're subsequently pasted/shared on other people's websites. (Of course, they'll make up some kind of BS about “protecting users from ‘dangerous’ external sites” to explain this away)

You would need to have seen that 145 times to afford a single worker for 1 hour at minimum wage. There is no way you could have your own staff to write posts based on that revenue stream.
If you are interested in increasing your income why don't you look at this.

Even better is that if you follow the link to the Polish URL and click through the Facebook redirect, you then get redirected to a .us site.@SamC said:

It still does something almost as annoying: fills my history menu with http://www.google.nl/url?lotsmorestuff instead of the sites I actually looked at. Makes it bloody hard to find some of them again.

Maybe that's the point?

They still do. That's why you use some sort of Fuck You Google/No Redirect script. Because fuck google and their browser fucking ways.
Also, you use F.B. Purity to make Facebook almost useable. Remove Timeline columns, auto-default to Most Recent sorting, hide newsfeed stories by category (Play my fucking game), or by keyword (like "inspirational").
-
Also for Twitter: fuck you twitter-shortened URLs! I want to see the entire link before clicking on it, not "somesite.com/this_pa..."
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/155804

The entire link is in the tooltip.

I don't want to hover over every fucking link to see where it goes. Especially since the URL is in the tooltip, but a redirector is in the href attribute.

That wasn't in your original requirements. You changed the spec.

Because the internet is volatile, here's the screencap our future readers (Hi there! Have you got nothing better to do?) will be thankful for:

Nice try.

Isn't this kind of redirect supposed to improve page ranking with Facefook or increase someone's friend count?

Someone should write a Firefox plugin that puts the tooltip in the clipboard when you hover over a link and click on a toolbar button at the same time.

Makes it bloody hard to find some of them again.I would really love to find a Firefox addon that culls my history of that sort of cruft. The only ones I can find are the "hide your pr0n from your boss/ladyfriend" variety, and they block based on the domain name. They also try to hide the fact that you have a history blocker installed or what history items they're actually going to block, so that your boss/ladyfriend won't get suspicious.
I want one that is transparent about what it blocks and can block based on a filter list of keywords and wildcards, such as,
google.com/url?
mail.google.com/#label/
translate.google.com/#
facebook.com/l.php?*
etc.

I assume this is the obligatory (and fully expected) "well then why don't you learn how to write one" response.
I briefly considered it, but I don't have the time, and I'm sure someone else could do a better job and maintain it better.

Actually, calling a phone sex service from your wife's iPhone is a BRILLIANT idea if you are trying to establish a (false) record of her infidelity.
