Google icons

  • It was not enough to make Gmail unusable. Now Google is expanding the "modern" look to all their services. I have no idea what the 3x3, head and planet icons do, I will have to learn it - always a good UX indicator.

I like the "do one simple thing" trend of recent years in app development. And at first Google was a pioneer with their magic search textbox. But with this update, Google is making their stuff harder to use. Wtf.

  •

Of course there is no explanation WTF this means. Clicking on them changes from 'showing private results' to 'hiding private results' but has no noticable effect on anything.

This is what happens when you have too many employees and too much money.

A quick google (the irony) explains that Google now intermixes your private data (e.g. mails in gmail, photo's in drive) in their search results if applicable, so I guess the name is chosen okay-ish.

So, if I have photos of kittens, and do a search for kittens, because I want MOAR KITTENS, Google will 'helpfully' show me results that include the pictures of kittens THAT I ALREADY HAVE.

Yes, that's the whole point. And then you can choose the set of results which includes your own stuff, or the set of results that doesn't, depending on whether you want to include the cat-pictures you already have on your computer or not.

When I logged into gmail this morning, the 3x3 thing showed up with a little balloon pointing to it with some text that tried, but failed, to say what it really was. It's supposed to look like the apps button on your smartphone (you have used one of those, right?) except that this is just for all the Google programs (which means it's actually more like the Google button on your Android phone). You can find search, gmail, maps, Google Play, etc. under there.

Part of the problem is that those descriptions are things that most people would never infer from those icons. I would have inferred something like "search for people" or "search the world" or "show me Google Earth".  A closed and open lock would have been better...at least those indicate something about access.

    ........... bravo.

My revenge will be unseen and brutal. Kitten brutal. Oh yes.

  •  Clearly the 3x3 icon is to search for your nearest square bowling lane.

I'm really confused. There are no buttons in that image. Well, except for the "search" button and the "microphone" button.

The funny thing is, nobody has actually use the word "button" to refer to anything in Ronald's or The_Jeff 's images.

    Except you.

Oops. Ronald was hotlinking my sig with ?admin=true so I sabotaged that, but forgot to check if it's defined first.

I can throw the thing into a git repository if there's any interest. It's not really the best code I've ever written - and it's my first time using PHP in over a decade.

Or maybe you assholes can come up with more pithy sayings. Right now there's a theme table with font, color, background image etc; a message table with simple variable expansion; a remote_user table; and many-to-many xref tables between remote_user <-> message, and message <-> theme.

This is the only other theme right now:

Yeah, you still live with your parents. The only reason I go incognito is to test my sites without add-ons.

I use incognito usually to see what the hell people are talking about on here when they mention signatures.
