New-Google-Maps is, in fact, the real WTF

  • Ladies and gentlemen, Grand Central Terminal. And by "central", I mean "Astoria".

  • Hey, uh, Ben L? That's the old Google Maps. Maybe actually read the bug description before trying to repro, eh?

  • My version of the new gmaps gets it right, as well.

I clicked the link. I did not change any settings. There was no button for "new maps" so I assumed I was already on it.

I click on the link provided in OP, I get the correct location.

I go to Google --> Maps --> type "grand central terminal", I get the correct location.

Interesting. Still broken for me. Of course, I've got a browser that's set to use new-Gmaps by default (another WTF) and I navigated over to Queens manually and just discovered it there (the search and the directions work fine).

The new Google maps finds you, like in Soviet Russia. And then nags until you try it.

  • Doesn't Google tailor its search results to what it knows about you? So if it gets anything wrong, you're just a confusing person and expecting too much.

You go to maps.google.com and click "Try new maps" or thereabouts.

It's horrifyingly slow on my machine, even worse than the current maps.

I don't think I can find it. It's too subtle.

Same here, but at the location on the real map shown in the screenshot in the OP's post, it says "grand central station" not "grand central terminal". I can see this in Astoria, in the location shown by the OP. Street view shows someone's garage at that location, so there's still something screwy going on.

I get that area empty. And there is no link or menu option for trying it.

Google simply does not want me to use the new maps. I guess their AI respects me for some reason.

I've never seen that before. However, it's possible that I just didn't notice it. I find that sidebar thing that Google insists on using to be useless and annoying , so I always close it immediately so I can have the map full screen.

Actually, it says Grand Central Station until you click on it, and THEN it says Grand Central Terminal.

It involves going to Grand Central Station.

  • Grand Central Terminal is the subway station, and Grand Central Station is a post office, correct?

  • No, actually it's a 1970's rock band. An American band, if you can believe it.

    ... your mom?

  • Last time I tried to use the new gmaps to check traffic was a disaster. The old gmaps has a button in the top right that says "Traffic" that you click to bring up the traffic reports. In the new one, I spent five minutes searching around for the button, right-clicking on things to no avail, before I found out that you have to type the word "traffic" into the search bar before it would give me the option. Because that's clearly more user-friendly than clicking a button.

Looking at it now, they've added a traffic button, but it's only visible if you mouse over the search bar and you haven't searched for anything else already. Dunno about you guys but my normal MO is to figure out where a place is, THEN check the traffic between that place and me, not the other way around.

  • I'm now waiting for the day that they screw up typing in the search field.

Google is lucky they have quite a bit of room to fuck up before they become as fucked up as their nearest competitor. My pet theory is that there's some internal wager as to how much their users are willing to put up with rather than switch to eg Bing.

Does it work differently on a Google tablet?

Because those changes seem to me to be the worst possible for a tablet with its limited typing and mousing capabilities. But if it works differently (read: better / easier / the old way) on a Google laptop or tablet, wouldn't that be ... abuse of a monopoly position?

  • @dhromed said:

I tried it once, it crashed my browser. I decided to give it another shot, and it again crashed my browser.

Over the past say, 2-3 years, no website has managed to crash my browser (YouTube sometimes freezes it, but then I can just stop the Flash plug-in and all is fine again), but the new Google Maps managed to straight up kill it to the desktop. So yeah, not trying that one again any time soon.

Nobody actually cares about monopolies, unless it's Internet Explorer.

I guess a big monopoly is bad but breaking it up into a bunch of smaller regional monopolies is not bad. And they've been buying each other up, it won't be too long until there's only one or two telecom companies again.

You're thinking of Grand Trunk Western Railroad, but that wasn't a very good name for a band so they changed it.

  • I think they should stop making better computers or something. I bet those google gyus are rendering the whole fucking screen each time, using the canvas 2d vector API, or something even more incredibly stupid. Hey we could ray-trace them in javascript! Of course on all the cores using WebWorkers!

In fairness this would have made the East Side Access project significantly cheaper than the current ~$8.24 billion.

  • @Nexzus said:

Well, my interface had it as a "transit hub" and "architectural landmark" (with link to a collection of impressive photos of facades with clocks and angels, statues of Vanderbilt, constellation-ceilings, etc). Nothing about postal services.

Anyway, really Grand Central Terminal is more of a commuter railroad station than a subway station. I mean, sure the trains come in via a tunnel, but most of Metro North (and the future Long Island Railroad access) is trackway that's above ground. And sure, there are also subway trains at Grand Central Terminal: the Lexington Avenue Line, Flushing line (via the Steinway Tube), and the Times Square Shuttle. (All old Lexington Avenue Line trains, interestingly enough.) But I do believe that the train station predates those, and is the reason that said subway lines were built to the location to begin with. I've seen the historical maps.

It's a layer (like markers for public geocoded photographs in the area) so access to it is done in the same way as access to other layers. I suppose the old way was better if all you ever wanted was access to traffic info, but that's not the only thing people do with Maps…
