Apple jihad

  • This is even worse than the old begin space space bug in Outlook Express or the also old input type crash bug in IE.

A bug in Apple’s CoreText rendering engine in iOS 6 and OS X 10.8 causes any apps that try to render a string of Arabic characters* to crash on sight. The string of characters which can trigger the bug — which was discovered yesterday and has spread around the hacking and coding community — has made its way to Twitter, where even looking at it in your timeline will crash the app.
    ...
You could also change the name of a wireless network to the characters and it will crash any device that scans that network to connect.

I wonder what would happen if someone was to include that series of characters in their signature. Or to massively inject it in tags so it shows up in the tag cloud.

Something that forces people to use Opera Mini could be considered malware. But since it only affects people who already gave up their right to a decent computing platform (aka Apple customers), this could make for an interesting semantic dispute.

  • I'm sorry, but Windows is the platform that people use when they don't feel that having a good computing experience is required anymore and "it sorta kinda works" is sufficient.

Where did you steal that line from? The op-ed page of an "Hardcore Computing" copy you found in your boyfriend's closet?

  •  And even if it were true, Apple would still not be the only alternative.

All's well here too. I did see the previous bug, where three or four slashes would crash the app, but this one seems, er, less substantial.

Are you that insecure about yourself and you struggle to come up with any argument on why Windows isn't the "kinda sorta works" platform that you need to resort to homophobic remarks?

I guess Windows is as bad as I suggest it is, when even its supporters can't come up with a decent argument for it.

You really think that with such weak teasing you will trigger an all-out PC vs Mac war in this thread? Don't kid yourself, sissy boy.

Also there is no need to look for arguments. Apple has sold billions of overpriced devices for years because they were good at marketing, it was never about the quality of the product. Only Apple customers will say that Apple products are high quality, and this is merely a manifestation of cognitive dissonnance. Look at latest IDC numbers and you'll see that Apple is going down, fast. Even by shoving a new iPhone up the ass of their existing customers (something that some of said customers apparently enjoy and will even stand in line for) they will not be able to slow down their nosedive. Even if Microsoft is doing basically nothing by Christmas it will be a close call between IOS and WP8 for the second rank in mobile market share.

Last night I was watching a consumer tv show, you know, where they test stuff and tell people which one is better and how much it really cost. They had a segment about smartphones, and for the first time I heard a reporter saying that the iPhone was "still available" but it was very expensive and that Android was more popular. They even put the iPhone in the same challenger category as the Z10 and Nokia Lumia.

About Macbooks: I have a few. I have an addiction to laptops. I buy new laptops all the time, for no reason. Once in a while I decide to "keep an open mind" and I buy the latest Macbook Air or Macbook Pro, and to be "fair" I pony up more dollars to get the big SSD or whatever upgrade I can get. And every single time I regret it. Every single time I expect to be amazed but all I see when I open those overpriced piece of shit is something that is less advanced than Gnome in 2005 running on hardware that has a less modern design than a Zenbook or a latest Asus. And I always get annoyed because of the iTunes devices limitation (and general performance). And battery life. And heat. And weight. I'm not saying that Macbooks are the worse of laptops, they are better than say an entry-level HP Pavilion once you get OS X out and run Windows on it. But for the money - it's a rip-off. Put Ubuntu on a commodity laptop and for $500 you'll get a significantly better experience than OSX on a big Macbook (and I hate Ubuntu).

As for tablets... well. My cousin is a college kid and wanted a fucking iPad "to do her homework". I told her she would be better with a Windows 8 tablet (not RT), but she basically said "Ewww". So I got her the biggest iPad they have, with the SIM and all that. She called me a week later and said she could not do her homework on it, at all, and was it too late to trade it. She is now using a Samsung Windows 8 tablet and she is very happy. I told her to keep the iPad and do you know what she did with it? She leaves it out in the living room as a guest device.

inb4 being branded an apple apologist... IOS beat android out 2 years ago, hands down. My wife got an iPhone and I got an android device at the same time, and the iPhone was a lot easier to use and work with in many different ways.

Now? android beats apple. Android has made great strides improving stability, usability, and general polish (the sheen, not the language). iPhone has largely stayed completely static. What has happened in the last 2 years? Siri? literally the only time I have seen siri actually serve a purpose was when someone asked it "what is an oblong?" and got a meaningful answer. Even if it was any good, its on android devices too now.

Apple has set the standard, but never subsequently raised it beyond the reach of its competitors. Now its just another smartphone.

I cant speak on Macs, i've never used one due to the inability to play the vast majority of games on them, and the price tag. I will say "It just works" and "Macs dont get viruses" are 2 of the most ridiculous marketing ploys i've ever seen. my windows PC doesnt "sorta kinda work". It flat out works. Half the justifications on each side of this stupid argument are wrong, outdated, or just plain lies. Macs are fine as long as you dont want to play the majority of games, PCs are fine if you dont want whatever it is macs are good at these days (is it still creative stuff like video editing?). End of. Everyone go to your rooms and play with whichever toy it is you like best and leave the others alone.

Siri was really quite good when introduced. I remember it being used by someone driving who didn't know the area (he was from another state) to find a local restaurant of a type we wanted to go to and plot a route to it. (We were fed up with ubiquitous steak and mexican places, which we'd been eating at for several days prior.) It worked very well for that purpose (and the Vietnamese place served very nice food indeed).

But it's based on open technology — I forget which university did the foundational work — so there was no real chance of Apple really maintaining a long-term monopoly on it. Which is overall better for users and the public in general.@Algorythmics said:

They're very nice machines for working on, being very much a fancy GUI wrapped around a core of Unix. The “just work” is indeed true; they just have more polish than Windows laptops, especially in the integration department. (They cost more too; you pay for the quality.) What they don't have is anything like as many games. If that's your sole purpose in having a computer, you're better off with something else. But I prefer to keep work and pleasure separate.

I disagree. I had to use an iMac for a whole year when we were building an iOS app. Constant kernel freezes, massive memory leaks requiring frequent reboots (and this iMac had 22 GB RAM!), automatic updates that break half the apps, refusal to do proper DNS queries (several domains we owned which were in public DNS records on the Internet would not work on the iMac...worked fine on any other OS) and of course the steaming pile of parasitic-worm-infected WTF that is Xcode. I don't even want to talk about Xcode. I hope it's ceased to exist since I last had to use it. And I hope the entire development team died in a fire, and then starved to death.

We also had Windows 7 installed on it. And that "just worked." So it wasn't problems with the hardware.

That sounds quite bad. I wonder what sort of problem was causing it, as it's definitely unusual.@mott555 said:

Nothing's wrong with Xcode that couldn't be fixed by not using it. And burying the team responsible for it in an unmarked grave.
