Minecraft mods?

  • Considered Harmful

Last week I decided to spring for Minecraft hosting. I've built with a couple friends a moderate sized subterranean dwelling, including a farm with wheat, carrots, sheep of various colors, cows, pigs, and chickens; and an arboretum with sugar cane and three varieties of trees. There's even a portal to the Nether.

It's all vanilla right now and I think I might like to spice things up a bit with mods. However, I specifically do not want anything to make the game any easier, I just want to add new mechanics. In particular, I've found redstone fairly limited in what it can do (I tried and failed five different methods of remotely starting a fire, mostly involving lava and/or netherrack). I'm also hating juggling my inventory so increasing inventory size doesn't seem like it would be too cheat-y, as long as I still have to manually procure/craft the items.

So, does anybody have any suggestions, or just want to plug their favorite mod(s) (even if it doesn't match the criteria above)?

I can share the server details if anyone is really interested, it's white-list only so I'll have to add you to that first. The only rule is: don't be a dick.

  • Maybe tekkit is for you.

We don't use tekkit, though. Our server admin is kind of nope, vanilla is enough and they're adding plenty of things. And that's fine. We've built a Sumerian style city with a big wall, a big church-like repo, all kinds of houses, and a massive ziggurat, in which we later decided to build a mob arena. I'm saddened that someone wanted to move the beacon from the ziggurat's upper floors, because its buffs were of better use somewhere else. :(

We also use JohnSmith's 32x texture pack, which is clearly superior.

I have not yet finished my pet project, the Ishtar Gate, made from lapis lazuli blocks.

I like your ideas, I may yet build a mob Colosseum.

Why not use a fire charge and a dispenser?

I have insufficient quantites of blaze powder and gunpowder.

Edit: the wiki page also says it does not produce cooked meat when animals are killed with fire charges, which is the intent of my remote fire mechanism.

    This is comedy.

  •  if you want some ease of use check out the feed the beast modpacks

  • I used to run a Minecraft server (haven't lately since I moved and surprisingly my Internet connection in Omaha is pure crap compared to the DSL I got out in the boonies of Missouri, add to that some neighbor is jamming our WiFi and it's not even worth trying any Internet games) and I had a pretty bad experience with mods. We had several large mods installed. I forget the names but they provided multi-worlds, area protection, and a couple other cool things. It was a pretty sweet setup. And then Minecraft updated. And very few of the mods were compatible with the update. And fewer still were ever updated again. Meanwhile all my players were calling and complaining that they couldn't connect, but if I updated we'd lose all the mods. Three months later only one of the mods was updated, and it was a stupid one I'd installed just to check out and nobody really used it anyway. Everyone quit playing on my server. And these were all close personal friends, not random dudes on the Internet. I decided I'd never run a modded server again.

  •  that's why I'm suggesting the FTB packs, that way no user will ever get a incompatible version as long as they connect up with the correct pack

also updating the packs to newer vanilla minecraft versions is going pretty fast (the mods are currently updating to 1.6 which is a doozy but most of the time updates happen very fast)
