Website not working!

  • Voice: Can I speak to programmer of this application?
    Nagesh: Who's this?
    Voice: This is the helpdesk. The user is facing a problem. I am at her desk right now.
    Nagesh: What kind of problem?

    User: nothing is working for me.
    Nagesh: What do you mean? Is computer on?
    User: Yes computer is on.
    VOice: She is not able to use single-sign-on to login to order tracking website.
    Nagesh: What has changed?
    Voice: She changed her password today morning.
    Nagesh: Ask her to use old password to login.
    User: Yippee! That did it.

    Nagesh: Thanks.

  • Good work Nagesh.  So, why did the new password not Synchronize?

  •  You are assuming that both:

    1 - She changed her password earlier at the morning;

    2 - Nagesh wants to do helpdesk work to the helpdesk drone.

    Rule 1 of tech support: never assume anything the other person says they did has actually been done. Verify everything. This goes for both sides of the conversation.

  • Rule 2:

    @Nagesh said:

    User: nothing is working for me.

    The more urgent the desired resolution time, the more vague the incident description.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    That's the second-worst bug report I've heard this week. The worst was “The thing isn't very happy.”

    Yes, that was the whole report. We couldn't tell if it was a problem with the portal, or the back-end dataset, or the execution engine, or the statistics engine configuration, or even the (admittedly ugly) blue/green color scheme. No, the user (who had apparently been sitting on the problem for weeks without telling anyone about it) didn't want to say more. I forget what it actually was, weirdly; it was a genuine problem in the end, but it turned out it was a problem with something someone else had done so I promptly stopped thinking about it, saving the old brain-cells for something I could actually care about. Just the sheer lack of information struck me.

    Technically, it could have also been a problem with the user's desktop I suppose, but then they'd probably have not told us at all. Or given us a lot of detail or something. We just had this little inkling that it might be in our product, or something accessed through it, rather than someone else's, as we knew who the user was…

    Way back in the late Pleistocene (around 1981 or so), we had a user in Ajo who was constantly reporting problems with the accounting system.  Every description was the same: "Uh, got funny numbah!"

    You are doing it backward. As usual instead of reading and replying, you just re-post in more details the same shit you already posted.

    I got a "it crashed, how long will this take to fix?" yesterday. When I asked them what they were doing at the time of the crash and if there was an error message, they came back with "can we continue using the application if it crashes due to error?"
