Explore restaurants, cafes, bars in Antarctica!

  • So I went to find the raw coords of an intersection in Toronto that I'd looked up on the Google Maps beta. I had to use a URL hack to get the coords. But TRWTF is that they're inexplicably switching from lat-long to long-lat. Not knowing that, I switched the coords. This is what I found:

So how many restaurants, bars and cafes do you think I'll find near 79°S 44°W, next time someone sends me to Antarctica on business? (I guess maybe they'll send me there to set up or maintain a data center, if they really want to save on air conditioning....)

  • TRWTF would be if they bothered to add a special case for Antarctica to say something like "It's really cold here, you won't find any convenient places to eat", rather than just saving a lot of coding effort and returning zero results as expected.

Actually, TRWTF is that they can't spell Antarctic.

Looking for the Science Centre, or are you trying to bury a geocache in a parking lot?

BTW: Just north of where you are is Memories of Japan, THE best Teppanyaki food in the city. The prices are also the best-- like, for lunch you can get a complete meal (soup, salad, entree, rice, ice cream, tea) for ~$10.  Dinner's only a couple dollars more.  Plus they're the only place I've been to that has cuttlefish as one of the regular items.

To balance this out, one block north of where you are is a nice WTF.  There used to be a large mall there. Nothing special, just a mall. But it had tons of stores. So one day someone decides "this place needs a change".  They knock the entire mall down, and in its place put up The Shoppes of Don Mill.  Notice their tagline: Toronto's First Open Air Mall, modeled after the open-air type malls of places like California.

Hey. Hey architect. Architect? Yeah. Umm, this sure is the first one in Toronto. You know why there's no other ones in Toronto?  BECAUSE THIS IS A GODDAMN TEMPERATE CLIMATE YOU STUPID TREND-SNORTING FUCKTARD.

We aren't exactly an arctic climate, but for a good chuck of the year-- the shoppiest time of the year-- the weather is below freezing. Not really weather you want to stroll through an open-air mall for. ESPECIALLY since you architect-ed the fucking places to be a goddamn wind tunnel. Nothing makes me a happy shopper like miserably trudging through bone-biting cold winds, trying desperately to not have my eyeballs freeze.

(And that's not even mentioning that they knocked down a mall in a lower-income area, and replaced it with nothing but a few boutique, high-end shops. Way to know your economical demographics just as well as you know your climate)

  • When I was in college, the university library had this weird pillar/support thingy on the outside to hold up the third floor extension. It was a three-story building and the third floor was much larger than the first two. Unfortunately it acted like a wind tunnel and on any moderately windy day there'd be 50+ mph winds through that corner, and that really sucks in winters because it's always windy in winter.

We're technically subtropical temperate or something like that, but we still get a month or two of sub-zero temperatures in winter and every few years we'll even get a week or two in the -20's (all temps are Fahrenheit, just to clarify for non-USians). The funny thing is whenever we get one of those super-cold snaps, everyone in the media is screaming about global warming. I'm not trying to start another political discussion, but it's just ironic when it's -37 outside which is practically unheard of here and the news media keeps talking about record-breaking highs this winter.

They changed the name of it for a reason.

What's really funny is I remember in the late 70's when Don Mills was actually an open air mall, and they spent a whack of money enclosing it.

And the reason being that guys like you probably keep on switching "local" and "global"

It's probably the same problem for you with those new-fangled mathematics called "averages".

Consider that a hypothesis, and this thread the experiment.

There was a similar building at my college, only it was the honors dorm.  In the middle of winter during my freshman year, the wind got so strong under the extension that it ripped out the ceiling (the floor of the second floor).  After they fixed the hole, they put up a wall of glass around the entire extension.

Oh, you mean that the BBC now finally has discovered an argument from several years ago? Counter to your Beeb link.

  • Well, there are bars in the antarctic. Kinda. They occasionally have sangria, even.

You mean to tell me you got that display and didn't click on any of them, just to see what they recommended?

"McMurdo Harp Seal Bistro - specializing in flash-frozen penguin served on a bed of free-range krill"

  • If you remember the Apple Maps fiasco (after they kicked Google Maps off iOS) there were lots of things in Antarctica if you had an iPhone. Including the city of Berlin.

That's like linking to fake-charities like ASH or CRUK for reasoned arguments for banning smoking.

You need some real fake charities there, like FOREST!

  • Google Maps even misspelled Antarctic Ice Shield

I can interpret that two different ways.

    1) If you will not link to any data, then you shall not make any claims;

    or

    2) You shall not link to data, nor shall you make any claims.

Yes, but around here I'd be worried that any reference to "number 2" would lead to poor attempts at scatalogical humor.
